My friend is offering me to sell his computer to me for $500:

FX-60 939 CPU
2GB Corsair Value Select RAM
ATI X800XL
X-Fi XtremeMusic (was once mine, )
ASUS A8N-MVP (also mine at one point  )
Lian-Li PC-60 Case
BFG 500W PSU
Big beefy copper Valmann HSF
no hard drives

What do you think? I think I'm getting a good deal, don't you? I have an RMA hard drive coming back in a few days, so I'll have a hard drive [no shortage in space (I'll have 2 250GB and a 320GB)]

this solves my problem, because I was having trouble piecing out a $500 computer. Sure it lacks expandability, but for another $250, I can rock LGA775, and I can pull some serious coin on that FX-60 to make the upgrade pretty much free!

That sounds like a really good deal to me. Slap in a X1900 or an 8600, and you'd have a really good gaming rig worth around $1,000 new. 👍

Take it, looks like a good deal to me. More so when you know it worked at one point and you'll have it then, no shipping ;)

Awww.. what happen to you're mac?

I had to sell mac to have money to take a vacation to toronto this weekend. And credit cards... those too.

This is a really good deal, even though Socket 939 is "old", the FX-60 was and is still an amazing processor. It's also dual core, so it's still got a lot of life left. A year and a half ago, that processor cost a grand; it's totally worth it.

Agreed. Also, like memomena said, a Core 2 Duo and appropriate motherboard can go for less than $300 depending on how picky you are in expandability.

A quick look on eBay shows that the FX-60 is running around $350, with a couple in the $250 range (but not Buy it Now). The E6600 Core 2 Duo (2.4Ghz) performs better than the FX in the majority of use, or will be just slightly behind (video/audio encoding).

I didn't realise you could get an FX cpu on socket 939. I was looking at getting a X2 4800+ as an upgrade, but now i'm gonna look into this!

X2 4800+ £80
FX-60 £250

Is it really that much better?

If I see one more iTrend boy say "z0mg G3tz @ MaC!!!!" I just might go on a rampage.

I think you could build a better computer for the money, but if you want to then go for it.

Make sure it's the Socket 939 X2 and not the AM2.

But to answer your question, is the FX-60 better? Yes. Is it three times better than the X2 4800+? No.

Better, yes. But the price is probably higher also because it is becoming dated and no longer in production (just a guess). Newegg still sells Intel's ol' Pentium Extreme, which was the top of the line Pentium D, for around $800+.
