why waste the money
First off,I did a search and came up empty on this subject so here I go.

The question my freinds is "should nitros be banned on the streets?"Now this is NOT a bash thread on tuners.(I refuse to use the word ricer)As all kind of cars have used nitros on the streets.Bikes included.

I for one think that it should be banned.Nitros can be a very dangerous thing to use on the streets as it can; A, blow up your motor faster than you think.
B,in the hands of the rookies, they can lose control of their rides in a blink of a eye.
When it is used in the proper place, like the drag strip,it has it's uses. But that is about the only place it should be alowed.Any coments?Lets here from you.

I thought it was illegal... :odd:

None the less, yes, it should be illegal and reserved for the strip.

Yep. 👍

In most parts of the world, nitrous oxide is completely illegal for road use. In the UK you are allowed to have it connected up, but you cannot USE it on the public road (similarly, you are allowed police radar detectors - and allowed to have them switched on - but it's illegal to react to what they tell you. I kid you not).

So this is really a moot point - they ARE banned.

Nitrous oxide injection is used in at least one legitimate FIA-approved form of track racing - the Formula Palmer Audi single seater series.

I think Nitrous Oxide is illegal to be even connected up for cars in Canada..

But seriously, what would you need nitrous for?

**** most of you are lucky.
Here in Germany there are so many strict laws for cars. There's barely any tuning you can do.

Nitros banned, well. They are dangerous, but I think they should be legal for legal drag races.

I think it's legal here in Sweden.
It's rolling many 8-sec cars on the streets here, so the conclusion would be, that the rules isn't that strictin my snowy country.

Nitrous is just false horsepower that does more harm then good. Sure lots of cars have it and well thats the persons choice to have it. I don't care if its a 1000hp Nova or a 130hp Civic, nitrous has no place.

Should it be illega...no. Thats to answer the question.

First off, the guy who started this thread has no idea what he is talking about.

Second, there are many reasons to have nitrous, the main reason - MORE HORSEPOWER FOR NOT ALOT OF MONEY. On a turbocharged vehicle it can be used to spool up the turbo, almost if not entirely eliminating turbo lag. It can also be used on the intercooler to cool the air-charge.

On an N/A vehicle it can increase the power tremendously. For those who don't have 3-4k+ for a turbo-kit, you can get a well packaged nitrous kit for around $500usd.

Is it dangerous? Just like anything else if it is not PROPERLY installed it can be dangerous.

Anything can be "dangerous on the streets". Is it the products fault that the person using it is an idiot?

I agree with this post.

It is banned in most places as has already been said, but it should be banned everywhere, sure it has it's uses, but you'd only put it on your car to go over the speed limit, you don't need it if your driving under the limit. It should be reserved for the strip.

I agree with monster. I once ran over a can on the street and it popped my tire.. does that mean tin cans should be banned because they're dangerous? If the product is used properly, it's not dangerous, its only the idiots who use it wrong that are dangerous.

Your allowed to have it hooked up in canada, but are not allowed to discharge it. As for whether it should be banned or not, the way the rules are now in canada is fine. Although, nothing is stopping people from discharging on the highway.

Isn't Nitrous a greenhouse gas?

It should be illegal for street use because it has no purpose for driving on the street. Unless you're street racing, which is illegal to begin with, where else are you going to be using nitrous on public roads?

Blower's and turbo's should be illegal too. So should big motors. We should all be driving Geo's.

I should be getting my red/grey bottle in 6-7 days.:trouble:

Now Josh, I must ask you what is wrong with having a nice powerful motor? Certain lines of work require a motor of a substantial size in order to make money. I don't know why anyone would put NOS in their car when it's really so wasteful (and it doesn't really work for that matter). If I were to get an upgrade on my engine I'd get one that would be a long-term investment; not just something made for a one-time use (I'd get a turbo kit that would blow away any form of NOS). Then there's always the option of throwing a secondary engine under the hood, but that's just silly...

Josh forgot the [sarcasm] tag. I hope... :D

Its not NOS its nitrous. NOS is a brand name, there are other companies like Edelbrock (which I'm guessing Josh is getting), NX, Venom, Snyper, and I'm sure there are others.

More properly it's not "nitrous" either - it's "Nitrous oxide", since "nitrous" could apply to any number of chemical compounds, often abbreviated to NOx (chemical formula N2O, also called dinitrogen oxide, or "laughing gas").

But we all know what he meant by it.

Ya yout right, still its better then NOS.

Huh?

Did Famine edit his post afterwards or are you incorrectly correcting a non-mistake?

Anyway, there is little reason for nitrous oxide to be illegal. If someone wants to use it on the streets he should be allowed to. That said, it should be more difficult for people to get licenses.

IUPAC naming nomenclature stipulates that if there is only one atom of the second element in the chemical formula of a covalently-bonded molecule that the prefix 'mono' will be added to it.

N20 is dinitrogen monoxide, not 'dinitrogen oxide', just as CO is carbon monoxide not 'carbon oxide'.

OK, to the one who said I don't know what I'm talking about.I have been selling aftermarket parts for over 15 years. We send out,on a regular basis,400+ hp motors out of our machine shop.We have tooled up to do the tuners motors,as this is where the market is going. We see many after effects of the over use of nitrous, they usally come in a box.Now not everyone is a dummy when it comes to the use of it but we have to state on our bills that the use of nitrous will void the warranty.A turbo charged or blown motor has been built to live with the extra pressures created by there use. As long as we know in advance,we will drop the compresion so that the heads stay put.
I started this thread to get feed back from everyone and I feel that it dose have it's place.Yes, it is cheap hp,but it should only be used a the drag strip, not the city streets.I do not feel that it's use on the streets will ever be stopped. The only way to do that is to pull over every car and if it has nitrous, pull it out right there on the spot.(Ya like that will happen)
I do know that the local police are targetting the tuner cars here.To pull them over, they use the bumper height law and then go over the complete car.I have seen many on a tow truck been taken to the impound yard.

Well in the US, I mean, is it alowed to have one installed and connected, no, but what if you just have it in youre car in the trunk just "liein around"?

What aftermarket parts have you been selling for 15years? Can you provide a business name with a copy of your reseller permit?

"We send out,on a regular basis,400+ hp motors out of our machine shop". So you're saying you mill your own blocks, or that you build motors in a machine shop?

I've been in the import scene for almost a decade, what is a "tuner motor" ? [Insert laughter here]

Here is what you're missing, a 150-250hp car with a 50-100 shot of nitrous is NOT a dragster. It is only a 150-250hp car with a 50-100 shot of nitrous. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want to complain about something, complain about the 500-900hp muscle cars with open headers and more often than not, drivers older than Ronald Reagan.

What exactly is the purpose for having NOS on a strip anyways? Most drag races are categorized by the engine's horse power, right? If that's the case, wouldn't the race be just as close with or without the tank? I mean, so they reduce their 1/4 mile times but that doesn't prove very much about the engine, right? Isn't that part of the glory that most people seek in Drag? To build up a car to make full use of the engine dropped into it...

(sorry if that didn't make much sense - I just needed to do something "Intelligent" to get my mind off of accounting :p)
