I've been looking at the results archive on the official F1 site lately and I've noticed in a lot of the older races the finishing positions of runners are listed as "SHR", not as a position (e.g. 1, 2). I've searched a bit for what SHR means but I've come up blank. Does anyone have any idea what it means?

Here's an example of what I mean.

TIA for any help.

edit: The points awarded for that particular race seem to be messed-up too, not sure if that's co-incidence or not.

edit2: Nevermind...found out "SHR" means that that driver shared part of the race with another driver, thanks to this wiki page (which also explains why the points appeared to be "messed-up" to me).

"SHR" seems to indicate a shared drive. The two (in some cases, three) drivers share any points for the drive. The website shows only the car that finished, with the original driver that qualified in the finishing car.

Points-sharing was permitted until 1958, whereby you would only get a place, but no points. Teams could use it as a strategy to prevent other driver/teams from scoring points, but it doesn't appear to have been used that way. In 1961, shared drives were not given an official finish status; even if you had lapped the field, a shared drive wouldn't classify either driver as a finisher. Naturally, shared drives disappeared somewhere along the line.

In this particular race, Juan Manuel Fangio shared the drive with Lancia-Ferrari teammate Luigi Musso. Chico Landi shared the drive with Maserati teammate Gerino Gerini.

I see the so-called official site of F1 doesn't bother to denote Lancia-Ferraris from regular Supersqualos, even though they were technically assembled at two separate factories. But that's another matter.
