well after a good month of VASTLY improving my GT5 driving skills thanks to the helpful tips and videos on this forum, and spending hours upon hours running rome and cape ring (tsukuba not so much), as the deadline approaches for the end, i'm throwing in the towel. i climbed up to rank ~280 in the west but i need a full 4 seconds shaved down to make it to 128.

i am sincerely amazed at how fast you guys at the top are; watching your replays i just can't figure out how i feel so slow! i definitely hope a GTP'er wins this thing.

If you dont feel like giving up let me know, I will go into a room with you and practice, I will follow you and see if I can find you some speed. I am not in the top rankings but I am very well seeded in my division and can hopefully help you make the cut. Let me know.

I know the feeling... I'm in like 1100th place. Admittedly I haven't put a whole ton of time into it as I've been enjoying so many other aspects of the game, but I knew I had no chance at this. I may give it a final go today, but I know I'm done.

1100th out of 50,000+ people that entered the competition, its not bad.

Crazy, huh - that's like top 2% 👍

Yup, I bet if we checked the lap replays of the guys that did 2:49's and 2:48's at Cape the lap's would look like textbook driving, not bad drivers at all. The only thing is in this game we are pushing the car beyond the reasonable line, finding the extreme in every corner that the game will allow, sometimes its even a bit wacky. I would say if you took any of these guys towards the top that didn't make the cut and put them in a real car next to a top 100 driver, they would be able to find the line just the same.

My main issue I guess is that I'm a pretty good racer IRL IMO, but I have friends who are better than me IRL and have placed better than me in this competition. However in real life I'm not AS far off from them as I am here. I think they can just more easily cope with the loss of feeling (the SOTP feel when the car is sliding etc) better than I can.

I appreciate the perspective you give me though, unfortunately that still isn't gonna get me a job as a professional racer... back to working at it the old fashioned way :)

thanks for the offer GT Motion. I ended up spending the last day relaxing instead. i got too angry at the game on saturday. specifically cape ring. i hate that track now. haha. it was a fun experience at least. in the last few moments of the competition my rank dropped from 280 to 307 in west so i'm guessing there was a big flurry of improvements right before the end!

I probably won't go beyond Round 2. My final position of 118 isn't gonna' scare any of the top 16 much. I am glad to be rid of the cape, though it's like loosing an old friend ... or maybe some relative that's overstayed their welcome:)

I planned on playing my guitar a little, since it's been neglected these past 5 weeks (has it really been that long), but now I sit in front of my TV, typing this and wanting the week to pass quick

It's the frustration/anger that will destroy your focus and destroy your flying laps. Managing frustration and nerves while running lap after lap, restart after restart, was way more than half the battle to putting down solid runs. The second you get frustrated during a lap, you will begin putting WAY too much focus on the part of the track behind you and begin missing your marks for what's in front of you (well, at least this was what I was battling during Round 1, on top of being a wheel noob since Dec 29).

But the good part is that you can say you tried, unlike a lot of people I know with GT5 who seemed to be protecting their egos. Great effort from everyone on here. 👍

👍 Couldn't agree more, I got pretty heated as well trying to shave off as much as I could in only 48 hours of play. But take a deep breath, then work at it again.

Definitely. Just like in real life, managing frustation and mental state of mind/pysche is huge in your ability to focus. I go fastest when I am having fun, and feeling confident that I can push. When you are battling for every tenth out there, while trying to refine and learn the ways of sim driving, it's very mentally challenging. Just need to keep cool, try to keep a smile on your face and know that the improvement will come with time and analysis.

I managed to get to 145th in the midwest division and missed the cut by .400 of a second. Just didn't have enough time as I didn't get the game until after Christmas and was then out of the country for a week and a half in January. By the time I started I was only able to really get Tsukuba dialed in. I was pleased with my showing though and hope they host some sort of contest like this again. I find it a lot more fun racing with something on the line. Great job everyone!

i definitely agree with that. a few times on cape when i started to get frustrated i'd take a break and go out and come back, and i'd nail a .500 increase on my first lap. but as the time got closer and closer to sunday (and i had less and less time to play due to work), that overall feeling just messed with my head probably. that and i'm just not nearly as blazingly fast as the top replays i watched!! it's surreal to see people with laps that were that perfect.
