I'm in the market for a good, fast zoom lens that I can use for walkabout purposes. I found the Sigma 24-135 f2.8-4.5 and the 17-70 f2.8-4.5.

Another option is the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8-4.5. The 24-135 is on craigslist for $300 and I plan on testing it tomorrow. The 17-70mm is $400+ for a new one. Used ones are very hard to find.

Does anyone have info on these lenses? Is it worth the price? I can't find many reviews on them.

I know the Tamron 28-70mm is phenomenal, but it's also $400+. N

You mean the 28-75? I have that one. :)

How much is a 17-50? Maybe you could use that?

Still pricey. The problem with the 17-50 is the lack of range on it. I've had encounters with moose and some rare birds in the past. They run away too fast for me to swap over to my 55-200mm lens in order to get a clear shot of them.
