The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has unveiled country’s first electric car in 2011, entering the EV industry. Called SKEV 1 (Signal Custom Electric Vehicle 1), the car is an improved version of the 1992 Honda Genio.

The body was modified by Signal Kustom while the electric motor was designed by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Abdul Hapid, one of the LIPI team members claims that the lithium batteries are nanotechnology-enabled. Unlike conventional batteries where charging time is about six to ten hours, this type of battery can be charged in only one hour.

Fully charged, the EV 1 is capable of reaching speeds superior to 200 km/h and generating 156 horsepower. The car also has an indicator on the dashboard to display the distance that can be traveled with the remaining battery charge. Besides this, it is designed with a “regenerative braking system” (now a standard in such cars) which allows the vehicle to automatically recover some of its battery charge from by braking the vehicle when needed.

Dude, that is the most Ridge Racer-y car I see from my own country. Also, Genio is an Indonesian term for the early revisions of EG/EH generation of Civic sedans.

I've seen this in the flesh last year!! Amazing concept. A lot of Indonesian concepts are out of this world, but this one shines on the top of the crop. Liked for more open-wheel cars!

Tires far too wide for the power output, and as that output is just 156bhp the aerodynamics won't be called upon very much either. Style over substance.
