Sim Tires or not?

When drifting, should I be using sim tires? Its easy to drift with them, but it seems incredibly unrealistic and unpractical since (apparently) a good drift car is also a good grip driver. Losing traction with sim tires is an incredibly simple matter, while losing traction with slicks takes skill, timing, and practice. Which do you guys use for competitive and exhibition drifting?

I've heard before, that sims in Gt3 is designed to resemble the closest to what real street tires are and how they react to different motions, so the new way that i've seen sims is that it is the real deal and it's a chump way any other way, not to step on anyones toes, but it's all i use, and i respect all drivers and drifters alike that use different

The way the GT3 driver's assist works (I mean the thing that prevents you from insane understeering or turning too fast and spinning out with the Dual Shock), the way it works is it only lets you understeer and manually oversteer so much. An depending on how well the tires you are using grip, the actual allowed car rotation speed can vary quite a bit.

Like, with sims, you turn really slow. Otherwise you would plow through every turn in a straight line or be rotating at too high a rate and be unable to prevent a spin. But sims are ideal because you can't really chuck your car around with any tires. It's just too sluggish.

Apparently this has changed ALOT in GT4:P and will probably carry onto GT4, so I expect to see alot of sport tire drifters out there.

Since the guy asking is a new member, it might be a good idea to find out what hp are you planning on using. I wouldn't recommend sims if you went over 350 HP.

For my drifting style any way. (well i don t think i could drift well with sim's on a s13 with 500hp).

but i would like u to tell me how fast sims are.

well your into race drifting... I'd reconmend slicks or higher because sims arent meant for speed...Last time i race drifted was with an Rx7 lm with 979hp and i won because of my power.. heh

BTW: You might wanna watch your tone...

Yea i gotz med-softs on the front and med's on the rear on the car i driftin with now ( works good for me ).

only car i drift with supa softs is my supra.

About the tone spose i was just mad i don t know why that guy contradicted me?.

It only matters if ethix101 is afendid with my reply.

Why are u tellin me to watch my tone. I not trying to be rude or be a smart ass when i askin this.

Sims represent the real thing, it says so in the tuning shop in gt3.
Try using a JGTC car or something similar with sims, a force-feedback wheel and driving assist on simulation setting. The tires wont turn that much, as they don't in real racing cars. The driving feel is very similar to the F1-gt mods, such as DTM and ETCC mod. You can't floor it on turns or anything. You have to be very careful with the accelerator and this makes the car almost impossible to drive by sunday drivers. In corners you need to press the accel just right, not too little or too much, or you'll spin.
I'd say the sims are like real tires in drifting also, but can't really be used if the driving assist is set to simulation.

On pro setting drifting feels very realistic, you really don't need to touch the wheel to make the car countersteer, you just need to hold it on the right postition. The 900 degree turn radius of my wheel would make drifting a real blast, but in GT3 force feedback is cut due to the fact that the 900 degree turn radius is only supported by GT4.

Anyways, i drift with sims only, with reasonable HP.

sim tires only represent the real thing as in low tred tires. All the tires REPRESENT the real thing. it's just that some have better grip. The sims just make you slip extremely easily. There is really no skill required. I just use the super soft to build my skill up and go my fastest. Thats my opinion.

Its also better to try out new thing every once in a while.

sims don't represent the real thing...
run a quarter mile with stock cars equipped with stock tires, and then sims and i bet you'll take that back...

i think the gt3 people wanted the sim tires more for tires with like 20% tread on them. And also the sims don't represent stock tires.

First off, I believe most cars react better to different types of tires. Sims are the same to like every car. I personally like the combo's, Sport-normals, Meds-s.Slicks, etc the best.

As long as the ride height's low it feels the same, that's why I try giving myself a little suspension to work with now. Feels more natural.

Try sims on an FC or Ae86, then try sims on an FD or RX-8 you should feel a huge difference in grip and stability.

Sims give different grip depending on the car, try s2000 with sims. It grips really well.

Anyways, has anyone of you even tried other car sims, like the f1 mods (european touring cars championship for instance) or live for speed?

The cars don't grip anywhere as much as the ones in gt3 with supersofts. And even if supersoft tires are like the real ones, they don't last for even a lap if you drift.

When I say it feels the same, I say it feels the same while I'm drifting in every car with sims, not while I'm gripping. Once the traction's loose, it all feels exactly the same and all I have to worry about is how much power I give it. Yet, almost all of my cars react completely differently in the style I have to use when I use S.Slicks.

GO SIMS SIMS SIMS
I think sims are the best maybe slicks but ah i like SIMS
Unless u got the supra with 1000hp and up u can use what ever tires u want then yeah.....

P.S. Go Sims

yes, i agree, i use sims to only get better (and to put on a good replay with smoke and stuff), supa slicks i used wit AWD cars cuz i get a better reaction when going full throttle on a 90 degree turns. but sims is the way to go to get better.
