In amongst all the concept vehicles and new models on Volkswagen's stands at last month's Frankfurt Auto Show was the carmaker's new ad campaign, which can be surmised by just two words – "Das Auto" (German for "The Car"). The hope is that the ads, which have only be launched in Germany thus far, will brainwash you into thinking 'VW' when you think of a car.

Before you brush this aside as just some marketing nonsense, consider what Coca-Cola is to cola soft drinks, Hoover is to vacuums and Kleenex is to tissues. "You don't ask for brown lemonade, you ask for Coke," explained one VW spokesman. Yeah, that doesn't sound refreshing at all.

The other benefit of the new slogan is that it's so simple, it will work with roughly the same effect in most other languages. VW's previous tagline was "Aus Liebe zum Automobil," ("For the love of the automobile") but the same message was not being conveyed when translated into other languages, especially Chinese. "Auto works around the world," the spokesman boasted, "so the question is whether it will be just 'Auto' or whether we say 'the Auto.' "

Whatever it turns out to be, expect to see the ads beaming across TVs and billboards around the globe wherever VWs are sold in the near future.

Das Auto? What the hell? That's uber boring. Any thoughts?
 
Well, I love anything uber-Deutsch, so I find it cool. Then again, I do like their current slogan, "Drivers Wanted."
 
It might work. Volkswagen? That means the people's car. A little communist but it might do something.

My favorite billboard was "German Engineering in da haus."

For such a "hip" brand as Volkswagen, you thing they would come up with something cool. With character. Being creative. Probably the last brand I would associate with corporate tricks like this.

But yeah. VW, come up with something cool. I don't want to think of VW as "THE CAR." That sounds boring. It makes it seem like something ordinary. They want their cars to be thought of as cool, unique, clever.

IMO, VW has always been good at getting their slogans right for different things. But, I still don't see a reason why they need to change out of "Drivers Wanted." But, then again, I thought it was really odd when Chevrolet ditched "Heartbeat of America," but that really wouldn't seem to go over too well these days anyway.

IMO, they should stick to what they have and come up with cool slogans/gimmicks for their different models. Recent examples:

- GTI: "Vee-Dub in de haus!" with the Gang stuff, "FAST" demon
- Passat: "Lowest Ego Emissions," which was awesome, and I wish they would have put it on the rear of the car...
- Jetta: "Safe Happens," which was also applied to other Five-Star vehicles.

...Not to mention the various promotions previously such as the iPod with a new VW, the K2/Trek Jettas, assorted band Golfs, etc...

Yes. It's a success, but only in one language. What works in German can sound idiotic in English when you translate it directly. A phrase so compact and simple as "the car" sounds bland at best, but it works as a better concept in German. The reason is that different langauges aren't direct word replacements. The way objects are perceived can be totally different, too, especially in a subject-specific language like German. For example: read any manga recently?

In short, it's only half of a good idea, and it's probably not fixable.

How true. I always laugh whenever I see McDonald's slogan in French. C'est ca que j'aime. It just doesn't sound like it is as "cool" as it is over here, and is indeed a mouthfull if you are trying to attract customers with it.

"The Car" might seem a little bland to us, but maybe "Das Auto" is something totally freakin awesome in german.

Personally, I loved the old one they had, "You only live once"...



But yeah, the German translation doesn't really work.
 
But, leaving it in German does....

Yes, Das Auto...if kept in German...could fly in the U.S.

VW are quick. Very...

Just yesterday, watching Shanghai Qualifying, I've seen around 3 different car-commercials for Volkswagen that included "VW - Das Auto" (heavy emphasis on "Das"). Some of those were old commercials with the Das Auto slapped on...
 
That is such a pathetic slogan. Their last one wasn't exactly great, but the reason it never caught on was because they never emphasised it enough. There was just this "Auf libe zum automobile" or whatever under the logo. It could have been the new Vorsprung Durch Technik with better marketing.

And, I'm sorry, but nobody is going to start calling all cars VWs. VW are as much the market leader with cars as Samsung are with MP3 players. They're a big player, but by no means have enough of the market to have any chance of pulling this off. Nobody does. Unless of course you own a Skoda, in which case you'll probably have been calling it a VW for years.
