I use the arcade "single race" to set up/get used to my cars - set laps to infinite and go for it. What I can't tell, is whether the AI runs sports or racing tires in "single race." Anyone think they know?

I figure they run race tires, because when I use S2 I have difficulty catching comparable cars, but when I put R2 on, I flush them down the toilet so I can't say.

Also, (and this has probably been discussed before in great detail, but I've never found anything searching) has anyone ever noticed that if the AI leads the race, that particular car goes berserk? I noticed it in B-spec mode for GT4, but it's prominent in GT5P. Some bastard tuned Elise will creep through the field slowly gaining position, then as soon as his position ticks over to 1, BOOM he's gone. I think it has to do with fear of passing. In GT4, my B-spec guy did the same thing.. he'd look pathetic and baaaaarely be able to pass people,. But when he finally took the lead he gave it the gusto and lap times shrunk substantially, regardless of having to pass lap traffic, etc. Am I crazy or does this happen?

They race on what ever you set them to race on. On the first screen where you choose the AI level, Physic Setting, TCS, ASM, Tyres, etc.

On that screen, the tyre chioce you set there, is what they race on I believe!?

I believe the AI races S3 tires. That's the default when you enter arcade mode and the difficulty level seems to be based on that. If you change your tires in that menu it doesn't change the difficulty level so I don't believe it changes the AI cars' tires. I find that when I use R1 tires I have to set the difficulty up alot.

Yes, I think so too. Unlike GT4, in Prologue the AI is using standart S3 tires.
(I notised the tire change in GT4, I love playing sim mode and test every car in the garage, so if Road tires were choosed, the AI will choose this compound too, if racing tires will be choosed, then the AI will use them etc.
But in Prologue you can compete with the AI on sports medium(S2) or sports soft(S3). In my opinion that is kinda boring.

Ok so when I set my tires on the single race entry screen, that will be default AI tires.. makes sense. It probably states that somewhere...

Any word on the AI's runaway mode?

AI runaway? Any driver can run at his own pace when he's on his own.

When your behind someone then you speed is governed by how fast they are. If they are slow you will be slow. This will continue until you pass them.

So yes that's what the quick AI cars do. If they are careful about overtaking then the AI's speed would be governed by the speed of the car it's trying to pass.

You would see this kind of runaway effect once they hit the front.

AI uses S3's only.

In GT5P's races, one AI car is made better than the rest, either by vehicle, driving ability, or both. For example, watch the AI in the replay and notice that 6 of the 7 cars initially ahead of you take a certain turn at 70 mph. One car will take that turn at 75. It's a really stupid system, but it's all there is right now.

the B-spec thing was really dumb in gt4, for instance, the B-driver would be passing another car about to take a corner 2-wide, but the B-driver would panic at the last second, nail the brakes and lose like 20mph of speed. Then he'd spend the next half-lap catching back up to the guy only to do the exact same thing again.

Normally if I was going to B-spec something, I would drive for the first set of tires to put the car in 1st place, then B-spec it from then on out. If I remember correctly when I did the 24hr of 'ring my audi won by like 20 something laps. I mean come on, if you're 2 hours in front of the pack in a game where cars can't break down...is there really any reason to keep the race going?

This is exactly what I'm talking about. My first 24h race, my car was overly fast so I let B-spec go from the start. I recall coming back to see my driver in 5th or something, consistently running very slow laps with nobody in sight. I also recall him crashing when I turned up his aggression or whatever. I took over and got the lead, pitted and let him go again and thank goodness - he was turning laps comaparble to my catch-uppers. I was able to turn him up to warp speed and he never crashed, just killed tires. That was a big WTF.
