It has happened a few times in the last 2weeks, where I have been posting here and talking to people on AIM and it just restarts itself. I have tried to convince my father to make me a user on this machine but he wont let me, "If you do something stupid, I dont want you back on my machine" Direct Quote.

Well, I was just getting ready to ask you guys about this! My computer isn't crashing, but it does seem to be taking the pages much longer to load than normal... I'll contact the system administrator and see what he has to say.

go get him jordan, let him have it... I got your back... waaaaayyyyy back!!!

Yeah I have noticed this same thing. All day today the site has been super slow. I kept closing t then coming back and I could not keep conversation with others it was so slow. :(

Well, apparently a few other sites have been running extremely CPU-intensive scripts, which has cut heavily into our forums. They are going to be asked to stop, or have them moved or deleted.

*cries because he wants a dedicated server for GTPlanet* :(

About the dedicated server, or the CPU-intensive scripts?

Hey! Go easy on the sys admins ... we only LOOK like we're goofing off all day (: Really what we're trying to do is fix the problems with our Jedi powers, which we all have. So watch your OWN back there biggun.

Would it be alright for me to ask who your host is? There isn't really anything I can do to help, I'm just curious. And do you know what kind of specs they have, like `net connection ... what kind of hardware/software your site is served from ...

Stone & Ward (my employer) is using Host Pro (who I think has been bought) by the recomendation of the former web guy. So far so good ... except for the very first week. They had a major hardware failure and lost 90% of their systems. Fortunately for them they had a recent tape backup.

Backups are bad ass, but we shouldn't live by them. I'm paranoid about S&W's data on a daily basis. It's running on a RAID 5 array with nightly tape backups that go off site. It would take a major catastrophy to take that out, but I still loose sleep over it.

I've got the site hosted at SharpWeb. It's a shared Dell PowerEdge server (much like the one featured on their home page...), running Linux, dual P3 866 Mhz, 1 GB of RAM (I think this has been upgraded from the time I received the information), and is located in the NAC.net datacenter. So far, I've been very happy with them, and their technical support is fast and friendly. :) The only real problems I've had (other than the one we're experiencing now), was when the World Trade Centers came crashing down on top of Level(3)'s cable (really makes you appreciate rendundancy!).

If I could get enough funding, I'd really like to get a dedicated server at RackSpace, Media Temple, or Voxel.net, but man they're expensive... :(

It would either have to be really nice looking GTPlanet merchandise, or he'd have to get really lucky with the lotto (: I could see myself wearing a light gray t-shirt with the GTPlanet.net logo on the pocket.

- User gives obscure hand gesture -
User - "This is not the resource intensive problem you're looking for"
Sysadmin - "This is not the resource intensive problem we're looking for"

Too easy.

Both... Im kindof dumb when it comes to comps.

OK, I know a bit about this so I'll field this one.

CPU intensive scripts:
GTPlanet stores all its data in a database, which sits on a server. You're probably familiar with the idea of a web page being a text file which the server sends to the browser, and the browser interprets it, putting in the text, and the colours, and the borders, and the images (which it has to load separately) etc. But this doesn't really help with a site as dynamic as GTP. So, instead, Jordan writes scripts, which are sets of instructions executed BY the web server PRIOR to sending the page to the browser. The page is then dynamic, because instead of being generated when Jordan wrote it, it's generated when you clicked on the link. Cool huh!

A CPU intensive script is one that for one reason or another (but quite often due to bad programming) takes up a large percentage of the web server's ability to work, thus slowing the response for everyone else who is competing for server power.

A Dedicated Web Server:
Wouldn't all we webmasters want our own server! This is because you're able to administer the server in your own way, and thus optimise it for your site. And also because you're not entering into the competitions I described earlier. But, as Jordan says, that's expensive...

Hope that's of use!

Very nice description! :D

I haven't noticed any problems since we've been on the new server (and all the bugs worked out ...). Now to just get all the fancy new stuff implemented! (:
