IGN
EA Working on Tony Hawk Killer
This time death is not an option.
by Kathleen Sanders

September 18, 2006 - Today, a representative from Electronic Arts confirmed to IGN that the company is working on bringing a whole new skateboarding game -- eponymously titled Skate -- to Sony PlayStation 3.

The last time Electronic Arts decided to drop into the skateboarding game pipe it was in 1987 with Skate or Die.

Although, details are few and far between the company could confirm that EA Black Box is currently developing the title. It will boast at least 14 skateboarding pros.

Right now the major competition is Activision's profitable and prolific Tony Hawk series. Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 plus Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for Nintendo's Wii will hit stores before the close of 2006.

Skate is scheduled to ship within the first 365 days of 2007. Currently, only the PS3 version is confirmed. EA teased that gamers should expect more details soon.
Do you think this will be a weak copycat or the real thing?

So is this the new frachise that they talked about?:dopey:
I don't know, it's from EA, so I don't have much faith.
Btw, the world isn't safe anymore, too many killers around, halo killer, ipod killer, now Tony Hawk Killer:sick:

I love how IGN loves EA so much. First skate board game since 1987? Try 2000 moron. It was called Street Sk8ter 2, and much like Grind Session, it was a weak attempt at beating Tony Hawk 2. Unlike Grind Session, it did nothing original, and (quite frankly) sucked big time. Neversoft shouldn't be worried at all. That being said, Black Box is a very talented studio. I still doubt it's quality, but at least now it's possible.

if they go for real skate, then they might have a market. TH is all about crazy moves. we still don´t have a sim.

If skate is its final name thats pretty weak! not that Tony Hawk title names are any better...... Im kind of losing faith in EA as they are trying to mass produce every genre of game every year on every platform and they sometimes come out with winners but most of the time its sub par gameplay with sub par graphics..... If they really want to compete they have to take skateboarding to a different angle to TH..... maybe do more of a sim than arcade style, but im sure you would fall off all the time! If its PS3 exclusive (which knowing EA's greedy hands it wont) maybe it will make use of the motion sensing.....what would be good its a huge mulitplayer aspect similar to TDU's MMOR (or whatever its called) so that you have a city full of real online skaters.....

Street Sk8er 1 and 2 sucked horribly. If EA is planning on doing a Street Sk8er 3 with this, they will fail. However, If they do a Simulation, that has a chance of being rad.

But it won't sell. Thrasher: Skate and Destroy was pretty sim-my, not to mention a good game, and it sold like garbage.

True, I totally forgot about that game. I guess there really is no hope for this game. I doubt it would have any skaters that the average public cares about/ Knows (Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, etc.) And the Tony Hawk games have a great reputation for being good solid games, Unless this game is a revolution, I can't see it going too far.

Although I've never liked Tony Hawk or been a fan of skating games, I did rather enjoy playing some of the Tony Hawk games. They were solid with the controls and the games have all been incredibly clean, pushing the system it plays on to the max.

I'm hoping EA can pull something great out of their rear, goodness knows there needs to be another solid skateboarding franchise other than Tony Hawk's lineup. I think it would be refreshing if another game was at least comparable in respect to the Tony Hawk series. As of right now, his game lineup has solid and unrelenting control of the skating market.

I hope someone reads this... I have a problem with Skate. I get reward videos sometimes. What are they for? Can i see them anywhere? They dont appear in the R1 list so its not a challenge. Cant find them anywhere =( Please help

Please reply if you have the same problem or a solution :)

I think they may be under media on the main screen where you select to start your career or they could be in the Extras. I will have a look in a minute for you and PM you over the PSN. BTW I really like the game, its hard tho.

I've checked those things, maybe you need to complete all the old Video Challenges to do these? I have no idea. Yeah the games is absloutely amazing! But hard when it comes to more advanced tricks.

My Brother in Law, who skates IRL, came by last weekend.. He has played TH since forever, but he really enjoyed the Demo - So it can't be all bad.

I played the demo of this on the PS3 a while ago and I must say I'm not hardcore into these kind of games, but Skate is very good. I like it much, much better than Tony Hawk, when you get a basic trick right it still really feels like you achieved something special, much more like the real thing in that regard (based on my rollerblade experiences). It feels more like a hardcore version of SSX than Tony Hawk, and it's well executed.

It's also reviewing and selling quite well so I think Black Box definitely delivered the goods ...

Yeah, Skate is a million times better than Phony Hawk. I could play the demo forever.

My oldest boy thinks the same way. The younger one loves Tony Hawk better. I don't care for either of them, really.

Skating is really popular in school right now. They've got these things called 'finger boards' my kids got a whole bunch of them. They trade them at school. They're also turning everything they see into skate board ramps, jumps, bowls, half-pipes, rails, etc. and it's driving me nuts. lol

Yeah, Tech Decks were the biggest rage back when I was in middle school. I think people get disenchanted after trying out skateboarding for real and learning that they can't do the absolutely insane tricks in Tony Hawk's, though. Skate is fun while being a hell of a lot more plausible.

I found the videos, its sponsor videos that can be seen in the skate shop at the Sponsor part.

I actually bought the game when it came out and I have to say to me, its 10 million times better than any Tony game. I've heard complaints about the camera angle, but you get used to it really quick and it really adds to the "skating around while followed by a camera man" idea of the game. Game play is great, although theres some frame rate issues when the game first loads on the PS3 which isn't apparent on the 360, although after playing it on both I find the camera to be a lot better on PS3. Definitely worth a buy if you're into skating or even the original Tony. 👍

You actually dont need to be into skating or tony hawk games. This is a very good start of skating since there are lists of all tricks and good info on everything! Very entertaining even for the ones who arent really interested in skating :)

I need help with a move I saw on YT. How do I do it?

Trick: After doing a kick flip or ollie on a 'jump' to catch some serious air, you grab the board (R2, L2) and then the character gets off the board and flies through the air sans board under foot, then puts the board back under foot to land.

I've seen people lie on their board, too. I did it by accident and searched the net to see how I can do it again. But, I haven't found a site that lists moves.

My boys got me playing this game recently. I complete all the challenges in the demo, and I plan to play my boys version of this game soon.

well i sold my copy as i never played it.

got Burnout instead.

Its pretty damn hard though! I'm pretty good with the flick-it system now, just not pro...haha

EDIT: I cant do the damn plan B pipe thingey, where you have to slide the corner?
