Hey, i am 17 and about to buy my first car soon!! :) And i am not well with manual cuz this would have ben my first car so i was considering buying a skyline gts-t.. How common are these gts-t auto? Will it be hard for me to get my hands on one? And can you still have auto (with of course the blow off valve) with turbo? Or does it have to be a manual.. And are skyline autos **** or can they still go hard and fast? thanks, please reply!

If you can afford a Skyline, you can afford some cheap car with a manual transmission just to learn manual transmission. The benefits of knowing how to drive a car with a manual transmission are very numerous and will benefit you greatly (improved performance, reliability, fuel mileage, all depending on how you drive. Manuals are also cheaper)

So go find some crummy Honda Civic (or similar car) with a manual transmission, and drive it until you feel comfortable with a stick shift. Then get the Skyline, it will be worth it.

GTS-t's *love* (i.e. watch out/drive slow in the wet) to get sideways. But you probably know that already. :)

GTS-t's come in manual or auto, with two or four doors but the automatic ones don't use blow off valves. You can buy one (BOV) that makes the 'psssshhh' sound whenever you press a button though. If that suits your fancy.

The auto's in Skylines aren't bad but if it ever breaks then it would be best just chucking a manual in it. Lot more fun with manual and you have more control over the car.

www.skylinesdownunder.com - Lots of knowledgeable peeps here. :)

I assume you're in Brisbane?

I'm also hoping to buy my first car this year (i'm 21) and have $1,900 to go on it. It is also another Skyline but the 4WD version of the GTS-t (the GTS-4).

Should have it before Christmas hopefully.

EDIT: Have you driven many other cars before? I've heard many (true) stories about how people have bought a first car (such as a turbo Skyline/EVO/WRX etc) and totalled it within a week because they aren't used to the power. I'm not saying this is you, but if it is then my advice would be to buy a slower car first (non-turbo) until you get used to it.

You'd save a lot of money that way and if you get a manual , as mentioned above, your driving abilities etc will improve. 👍

Skylines are known for their wet weather handling (once the turbo kicks in, the wheels start spinning - i've done it in a 4WD Skyline!).

i felt the same way about my first car. i was thinking about gettin a nice auto since i wasnt too great with manual, but seriously, you get used to it faster than you realize. just because you aren't great with manual, you shouldn't avoid it. If anything, you should practice more until you are comfortable. I don't really know what I'm saying right now, but if you put in the effort of learning a manual, its very rewarding and a lot more fun. Who knows, if you end up gettin an auto gt-s (if it exists) you may want to get a manual swap later on after you get tired of the slushbox. So why not save yourself the trouble for the swap and just start off with a manual? You won't regret it. :)

When i buy the (below) Skyline off Dad i plan on saving up heaps of money so i can throw a manual gearbox in it. Maybe a GT-R one as i think its been done before.

Don't bother with any Skyline below a GT-R, especially one older than an R34. They are simply not worth what they cost in the US. For what a low-end Skyline costs, you can have a killer 240SX, a nice Impreza, an FD RX-7, or a MkIV Supra. Not only will all those cars wipe the floor with a GTS-t, you can actually run them on normal pump gas. (And go through drive-through restaurants, too!)

I disagree. It doesn't matter how much power they have or what cars are better - Skylines (all) are very awesome cars and i'd honestly still get one if every single person in the world had one.

They sound awesome (got a growly 'don't mess with me' sound), look awesome (especially the GT-R models), handle awesomely (i've never encountered understeer in Dad's 4WD GTS-4) and have plenty of power. There are other cars out there that are better sure, but for fans like myself there is no substitute.

Nissan Skylines are my most favourite cars in the world, followed by Fords.
My #01 dream car is a R32 Skyline GT-R - #02 being a Ferrari F50...

An 6 year old skyline for 50k US dollars is a joke.

Are you talking about non-GT-R R34 Skylines (1998 onwards) or R33 GT-R's (1995-1998?)?

.....You could have a killer 240SX and be like 1/2 the mexicans in pheonix..Or an Impreza..and drop the transmission in a weak...Or an FD Rx7 and car suited for people 5'10 and under....or a Naturally Aspirated non turbo Automatic MKIV......Maybe defunct TT Auto if you find a good deal.

The cheapest legalized Skyline available in the US is an '89 GT-S. $18,000. For a car that sells for less than a quarter of that in Japan. A car with mediocre, at best, performance.

The only reason to buy a non-GTR Skyline in the US is to (a) impress people who think Skylines are the gods of cars, or (b) because of a personal skyline fetish.

I know a guy who had an R33 GTS-t, and just traded it for an R32 GT-R. The 33 was underwhelming. The 32 is awesome, but it's a $35,000 car, and that's before it's been modified as this one was. (Ohlns suspension, injectors / turbo upgrade, Power FC, et. al.) But, guess what, the owner has repeatedly stated that, more than anything, he really misses his old 240.

Unless you find some method that is significantly cheaper than Motorex, there is no reason to buy a GT-S Skyline in the US.

You've just contradicted yourself....
So you're telling me a Skyline is an ugly looking car? You have to think Skylines are the Gods of cars..or have a Skyline Fetish to think it's a nice car?

I know a skyline is far from the god of cars...and I could live without a skyline, but if I had the $ and one was readily availible i'd buy one, one for the name...2 for exclusivity and 3 because it's a nice car.

BTW..my first car was a Civic Hatchback....And I miss that car.....Does it mean my current vehicle isn't better than it? Nope....It just means I miss my civic hatch because it had history..

bottom line...if you WANT a skyline...get a skyline..don't let sales figures and "potential" of other cars sway your personal preference.

You're blind and stupid. He's saying that you have to have a fetish or think its god to justify spending 18 thousand dollars for a car that is 15 years old. Think about that for a second. That's just friggin stupid dude.

Are YOU Blind and Stupid? There's SO Many cars that are 15+ years old that go for more than 18 thousand dollars all because of a name man.

Name some. Ferraris? Porsches? Lamborghinis? I can garuntee you that any of those cars you name either started at over 60k to make, and those that do go for 18k have almost no miles on them or were extremely well taken care of. And I challenge you this - name a car that truely gets that much ONLY because of it's name, because that is all a 1989 Skyline GTS has going for it. It's not an amazing sports car that makes heaps of power, it's just an old sporty car with a name everyone loves.

Seriously, you can get an R32 GTSt for 2-4 thousand dollars in Japan. It's insane to pay as much as sixteen thousand dollars markup just to bring it to the US. Imagine paying 15,000 dollars for a stock '89 240SX!

In Japan, Australia, NZ, the UK, or any country where legalization is easier, it's another story, but in the US, it's just insane to buy any Skyline, unless you're planning on either getting a GTR, or building a car that you will never drive on the street.

Dude, the original poster lives in Australia, where the Skylines are dirt cheap, and well worth getting.

skitz_barbie: Don't listen to these guys, I HAVE an R32 Skyline GTS-t, and although personally I wouldn't buy one in auto, I think in you're circumstances it would be a good idea.

I wouldnt say it would make a bad daily driver but as a beginners car i think 200+hp is alittle too much. My older brother wrecked a mitsu starion that he got as his first car. i'd say get something like a CA18DE powered s13 as your first car .

as far as this goes , it is just plain stupid to go out and get a 15year old car that costs that kinda money unless it was in immaculate/mint condition and was a car of extreme pedigree (like say a porsche` 911 or corvette ... or the like) why would you pay that kinda money just for a name ? I could understand if it was wearing a Porsche button on the hood. As much as i love the skyline's they are no 911's . the only car really worth paying this much for would be a 911 now these are the ultimate real world mass produced sports cars (aside from exotics) and i do not even want to get into the reasons that will state why. If we where talking about GTR skyline's in this argument maybe this would be a diffrent story ... but the skyline name isnt as prestigious as the 911 name(that is my point).
