Did a search and couldn't find anything on this game so figured a thread could be started.
I went to gamestop the other day to look for some cheap old 360 games for my son. The salesmen were talking about this game that used figurines to play it with. I thought they were talking about warhammer or something and then I heard them say it was a video game. I asked them about it and they showed me skylanders. http://www.skylanders.com/ I ended up buying it and getting a few extra guys so he could use them.

So does anyone know anything about skylanders? It seems pretty cool for a little kid, but if it's stupid I want to return it, because it's going to end up costing a fortune when they keep releasing new characters for it.

What the deuce? I gave up on Spyro when I got to the forest suicide guy in the 2nd game because it was unneccessarily hard, and since I've watched from a distance as things have gotten from bad to awful. This is a new low.

You guys seem very upset about this Spyro character. Let's pretend Spyro doesn't have anything to do with the game.
Has anyone played this? If you have how is the game? Is it something a 5 year old will be able to have fun playing, or does it have a bunch of reading? It looks like a kids game and all, but if teenage and grown men are watching my little ponies, I really have no idea what is being made for kids now, and what is for adults and dressed up like a kids toy, or game. I'm just wanting to make sure a kid can play this before I give it to him, and waste a bunch of money on it. Gamestop doesn't take this game as a trade in, and I hate selling stuff on ebay.

Worked that time, thanks. It looks like my kid should love this. I think I got him a guy from every class of characters, so he should be good to go.

Surprised to see such little interest in this game... perhaps it is only becoming more popular with non-lottery winners now that the original games and characters can be found at more reasonable prices.

My nephew has Swap Force and Trap Team, and I'm only now discovering what a massive cash cow this game is for Activision! That said, it is in many ways the ideal game for kids to play with their parents because it is very easy for young kids but it can be challenging for older players. There is also the figures that are needed to play the game which are collectible and appeal to grown-ups too. Thus far, Skylanders is the only game that appeals to both me and my nephew. I know my sister has already bought quite alot of characters and my nephew buys some with his pocket money, but it still remains quite shocking to me just how many things you actually need to buy just to get through the game. Any adult thinking of buying this game (or any game in the series) should, at the very least, be aware of the fact that it is not just a game that keeps on giving, but a game that keeps on taking (your cash) too!

That said, the market on eBay for some of these things is quite crazy, not least because Activision seem to be deliberately targeting the collectibles market by making some figures hard to get (by releasing packs in drips and drabs), making rare figures (e.g. for game shows and employees only) and by making limited edition 'variants' of existing characters that you don't need, but might want if you want to complete your collection. It's not hard to be cynical about any one of these marketing ploys, and yet it remains an entertaining game.
