my friend told me at school today skylines where illegal. is this true? why? first he said "its cuz its a right had drive" then i tell him about my friends imported old school mini from austraila. then he says "no it just is" then i metion to him about this guy i saw on teh internet that lives in hawaii that has one then he says "its because they make it in hawaii" then i say "dont they make them in japan" then he says "they make it in both" whats right? are they really illegal or what?

The Nissan Skyline GT-R is illegal to drive on American roads due to it not passing American emissions standards (Japanese standards are different). However with modification a Skyline GT-R can be perfectly legal just so long as it meets DOT approval.

There is no law stating which side a steering wheel can be on in a car. If it did, Jay Leno would be screwed with his McLaren F1...

And Nissan Skyline GT-Rs are built in Japan. There are numerous examples in America, but they are a rare import merely because for the price of buying a Skyline from Japan, then importing it, then getting it modified to be legal, someone can buy a vastly superior car

No! The skyline is the BEST CAR EVER! DIEEE!

Hold on, I'm usually the one to say this. Go buy a G35 - It's a skyline. If you want AWD, buy the G35x. There ya go.

That was a hint, thanks for giving it away

Just buy a Fairlady Z, same platform, but lighter cheaper and better looking. Minus the AWD, but, hey, you can't get a V35 Skyline with AWD in coupe form or with a stick anyway.

I'm not a big Infiniti fan, though the G35 is getting some great attention. And with the Nissan GT-R slated as a 2007 model, America may finally get a handle on some of Japan's hottest cars. And I say it's about time. The R34 Skyline is the best until the next one comes out. The G35 is perhaps a more luxurious version of the fire-breathing Skyline. To add, it's much the same way as the front-drive Mitsubishi Lancer came to America before we got a REAL Lancer. That damned Lancer economy car was a disappointment in my view. Kind of makes you feel the same if you dislike the newest GTO apart from the 70s ones. Hmm?

Anyhow, back to the G35. If you ask me, I can imagine the next "R35" looking as curvy as the G35. I hope it doesn't have tall, vertical headlights. I say that if the next Skyline has tailights like the R34 and headlights kind of like the R34 while keeping the style of the G35, it would be a pretty sensational machine. Of course, you want a four-wheel drive version of it. What GT-R lover wouldn't want four-wheel drive except for some of the less powerful and older Skylines?

As far as Skyline laws go, I guess if you can work around legalizing them, more power to you. One big problem, and a song says it best:

"Money, money, money... MONEY... MONEEEY!"

You dig, player?

Oh, I dig, homie.

They should like do a 'unimodel' with various trim levels like a base model with maybe the Sentra's motor turbocharged and cheap interior... you know, like then 996, but instead of going from a $80,-something base Carerra to a $180 GT2 it should be like a $20,000 base to a $50,000 top model.

thnx for the responces!! DOT is the safety thing rihgt? cuase i know if you race go-ped or pocketbikes your helmet has to be DOT approved. is that the same thing?
im only 13 so im sorry if the questions are stupid

WOW..I didn't know CALIFORNIA had such tight laws..

In CANADA you're allowed to import a car as long as it's 15years or older..so this includes cars such as:

R32 Skylines
180sx S13 silvias
240sx S13 Silvias Japanese Spec

I can list a whole lot but its a pain in the butt just thinking of the cars.. :)

Victor Vance
DOT is Department Of Transportation, sy, yes they both are the same.

IS that the same thing in Hawaii..Cause a friend told me that in Hawaii if you have an imported car or a car with a slight modification (like Exhaust upgrade) you need some sort of sticker on your car which you will have to get through the DOT....It's kind of wierd..I thought the Laws here were screwed...

Also any car older that 25 years old is considered 'historic' and thus you don't need to do emissions testing, except in California where all cars built after 1955 must be smog-legal.

Your friend is an A-grade pillock. He's heard something and changed it, in his head, to a whole load of nonsense which he's then spouting as gospel truth. Slap him. Twice.

They make Skylines in Hawaii? What an arse.

Get a court restraining order on your friend ruling that he can no longer claim to know diddly squat about anything with a displacement greater than 100cc.

Hawaii .

Yeah, but you can't get Evo's! :p

Why would you want one? It's a fifteen year old car that, unless you can speak/read Japanese, you do not know the history of.

Why buy an old car? Here's some reasons why:

Same here, it seems that all the latest infiniti's and nissans are capturing my attention.

Nissan has registered the trademark "Infiniti GTR" All with good reason too, with the next GTR expected to be pricey, Americans would shell out more money for an infiniti than a Nissan add that to infiniti having a more upscale image, better service etc. We ill no longer be seeing the nissan skyline GTR, just a nissan skyline (luxury) and an infiniti/nissan GTR (performance)

It uses the FM platform so a 350Z/G35ish look will be there but I espect Nissan will make the GTR stick out above the two in not only performance but looks as well. I expect the traditional round afterburner style light will be there, its become too much of a GTR icon to not be included.

An updated versio
n of the current ATTESA-ETS traction system is suposedly under development, with an upgraded processor Rear wheel driven by a carbon driveshaft and the fronts by some superpowered electric motors, leave it to Nissan to make the next GTR a technological masterpiece ;)

The engine is most likey a VQ32DETT : 3.2L capacity, dry sump oil system, twin throttle bodies, Twin motor-assisted (spool up) turbos, NDIS Direct Ignition and separate intake manifold for each cylinder bank.

If your interested in the developments on the next GTR check out this thread:

But then importing it isnt that big of a hassle, since you wont be driving it on the road.....we're talking about legalization here, not track cars. It's a LOT cheaper to get a skyline here for under 30k...being able to drive it legally on the roads is a totally different ballgame. Come on dude, dont be retarded.

gonna say, there a trillions of skylines going around... how the hell could they be illegal? no way!! i love skylines and cant wait to get me skyline gts-t.. how much do u think i could pick one up for second hand with body kit, turbo (of course) and blow off valve?

Motorex has quite a few R33's in the 40-50K range.

Check your local auto dealer or used car mag.

You really need to tell your friend to shut up. He knows nothing about the Skyline.
The Skyline-only built in Japan.
To be here in the US: Must meet US regulations or whatever.

Truely, he knows nothing, He hasn't even heard of MotoRex has he? Tell him to he needs to go back and read some more on the Skyline history, and US regulations.

BTW, tired, and didn't read all the posts. Sry.

Before beginning, John of Houston, TX, USA would like to welcome Skitz_barbie to GTPlanet. Enjoy your stay. That makes it two or three new ladies on GTPlanet now with the hottest diva of the moment, McLaren'sAngel.

In addition to the next Skyline, I'd love to see it (1) in the JGTC against its rival Toyota teams, and (2) on the street for a battle outside of the JGTC. After all, the Skyline and Supra remain as one of the biggest rivalries. Perhaps it's on par or above with the Impreza/Lancer rivalry. If the next Skyline weighs in at or slightly above 3200 lbs, it will be pretty nice as a competitor. Thanks for the heads-up on the Skyline, SkylineGTR_guy. I just kind of want to see a curvier Skyline. You know, something that can cut through the wind pretty well. The R34 may have been a little boxy, but it could back it up with insane performance. The R34 is a Hell-spawn looking to raise hell against anyone who dare call it "cheap" or "underperforming." Beware of Skyline.

So the G35 is based on the FX45? I think that is a pretty cool machine. Not real fond of its looks, but it's... different. Only thing I don't really like about the G35 is the tall headlights, and the rear lights are kind of un-Skyline like. It's a nice diversion from the normal Skyline. Can't wait to see what the next generation of the long-running Skyline will look like.
