Sloppy Steering

I am brand new to this stuff and I'm just getting started with my new Thrustmaster T500RS. I've got my B and A licenses and during those tests the steering felt good. Now that I have been on longer tracks the steering feels really sloppy at center especially when going down a straight. I set the wheel force at max and I have had the wheel sensitivity from low to high. Am I missing something here? It feels like I'm driving a fifty year old truck out there at times. I would describe the problem as too much steering wheel play. The steering feels pretty good when I'm turning.

You certainly aren't having any luck with your T500 are you. Go into the Calibration screen and go to the gain settings. Experiment with the settings, mine are.

  • overall strength 45%
  • constant 100%
  • periodic 100%
  • spring 40%
  • damper 45%
  • auto center by game

Experiment and see what works for you, it's been forever since I played GT5 but there probably are in game setting as well.

With the T500 can you hook it up to the software on the PC and upload presets for it to use similar to the on wheel settings to the Fanatec?

No there are not. You can't set anything in GT5 apart from FFB strength which he has at 100% and me too. Also there is in the options a menu where you can set power steering and simulation mode if I am correct. I have power steering on and simulation mode on realistic. For me this feels good and certainly not like a truck.

That's impossible unfortunately. The settings made on PC aren't uploaded into memory to make them work on console.

@LogiForce

Was lefty talking about within GT then? I need to explore more again. I haven't been to some areas for over a year.

Logi is right. The settings in game are basic. Go into the first one, its for all wheels with force feed back and adjust there

Lefty is basically a PC only user, so he will mostly talk about PC stuff. What he mentioned is PC related.

Thanks a lot! I'm fooling around now with settings and hopeful that I can get something I can live with. I guess what I would really like is for it to feel like a real kart or even my daily driver. I suppose getting it to feel like a true Kart is wishful thinking?

Dude are you playing on PC or PS3 with that wheel? If so I am amazed that you actually feel a difference as there shouldn't be if you set settings on PC and plug it in the PS3 after. So honestly, I think it might be between the ears this time around. lol

The T500 is not a kart wheel, not on PS3 at least. If you want to have it like a real kart on PC just set the Centering Spring to 80-100% instead of by game. I am sure you are familiar with how a cart lifts up at the front when you turn to the wheels? The centering spring will create an equal kind of... force that lets you experience this. At least I reckon it will as the centering spring from the driver can be powerful.

I don't understand the above, please explain for me, a non computer type. :dopey: If I adjust the gain settings thru my computer, do I just hit ok and have the changes take place or is there more I have to do to make those changes take effect? It doesn't seem like the changes I've made make a great deal of difference in the steering feel? I did try the power steering and I didn't like that, it seemed to slow the responsiveness?

Thanks

What he's talking about is the following:

Plug the T500RS into your PC, change options using the Thrustmaster software -> the changes will be saved to your PC _ONLY - not to your wheel itself.

Some wheels have internal memory, so changing their settings on a PC will make them behave differently on a PS3, too. :)

How do I get the wheel to accept the changes? What is the point of changing the settings on the PC if it doesn't change the way the wheel works?

Thanks

It's meant to change it's behaviour on the PC, for PC games. Most PS3 games have their own settings menu, so that you can change it directly while playing. :)

What PC games are available? I've heard of an online racing league where you pay a fee to race. So I guess the changes on the thrustmaster screen would then have an effect in that series?

Indeed. You've probably heard of iRacing - www.iRacing.com. There are lots of other games available, I'll name a few of them:

- GRID
- F1 2010
- F1 2011
- SHIFT 2
- SHIFT
- iRacing
- rFactor
- GTR Evolution
- GTR 2

But believe me: you'll learn how to use the options available on the PS3. It's just a different menu to set your wheel up. Well, GT5 doesn't have a lot of options...the car's making the wheel behave good or bad, just like in real-life. :)

Thank you much, it looks like this is going to be lots of fun! I had a friend over last night and we raced for 4 hours!
