slow loading

whenever I goto a page on gtplanet it takes like 7 seconds after some of the grpahics have loaded, before I can actualy start scrolling and clicking things. It's not like this with any other site I goto. Is there something on the site that slows down loading?

Does anyone else notice a slowdown?

I'm on 3mbits connection using GTP Lite and notice a TIIIIIIINY difference...

"duude why do you use GTP Lite ????"

Because the colors are less agressive, faster loading and an advantage that I like, the button going to the last post of a thread... :)

EDIT: oh and disposition is cooler :D

Yes, well we are currently having a few serious issues that hopefully I can get resolved soon.

The server went down for a few mins earlier.

I found the pages seem to load faster now, but before they were slower.

I've noticed this too.
I believe it's down to the script that puts the rollover ads on key words -you know, where you get highlighted words in the middle of a sentence: eg What are the best tyres to use?

I'm not exactly sure what ad-server does this but it DEFINATELY slows the delivery of a page as I'm pretty sure it's a javascript that runs once the page is loaded. This is why often you will see the page, it pauses a while and then you can scroll/click through links etc.

I hate it and it really gets my goat (I was going to say pi**es me off but thats rude and I didn't want to resort to swearing ;))

While I understand that advertising is an essential part of sites like GTP, who need financing to keep the site going, but this sort of stuff is a pain in the wassname and spoils rather than enhances any visitor experience.

I find that now I visit GTP a lot less and when I do read fewer posts than I used to as I just get fed up of waiting for pages to load.

---- EDIT ----
I have just noticed how much quicker the site is now I'm logged in.
It seems the 'ad words' only get highlighted if you are an anonymous visitor - I don't always bother to log in unless I'm actually making a post.
Looks like I'll have to log in more... although I don't like the idea of being forced to to that... it has the feel of 'big brother' tactics to monitor who is doing what and when (not that I am making any specific accusations here its just that its easy to be paranoid).

...which is why you have the the option to browse in "Invisible Mode" while logged in. Also, I'm very suprised to hear that you experienced problems with adwords. It's the first complaint I have ever received about them and I have not found any noticeable difference in page rendering on any computer that I have used. What browser are you using?

Thanks for the quick replay Jordan.

I didn't know about the invisible mode... i shall investigate ;)

As for my browser, I tend to use IE6.

There is definately a marked difference between being logged in and not and the maindifference i see is the highlighting of ad words.

I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill on this but when I saw the original post it just sounded a lot like what I am experiencing.

Hello, I'd like to add my support for the theory that adwords is causing the slowdowns. I'm having the same problems as described by the thread starter. When loading a page, first the page loads, and then, just when you want to start scrolling or clicking links everything freezes for a few seconds. I've found that, by turning off java(script) the page loads normally, no adwords are generated, and no slowdowns are caused.

The Windows XP CPU monitor shows that, when loading a page with JavaScript on, the usage jumps to near 100% for a few seconds: (refresh on the main forum page)

Whilst when refreshing the main page again, this time with JavaScript off:

All this on a Pentium 4 1,8 Ghz with 512MB ram, Windows XP and in FireFox. A somewhat older system for sure, but it runs the latest games just fine ;).

Niiiiiice you have McAfee, pure security right there :D

i use two different computers to get online sometime. one that uses dialup aol and another that uses firefox. oddly enough the old aol is faster sometimes. i notice a lot of lag when i try to log in with firefox and it often takes a few seconds to let me scroll down.

Agreed :D

I don't notice the loading times really. I think it's got quicker since i bought premium, but it's pretty much instant posting, if not page loading.

I get the occasional bit of lag, though.

Jon.

Yeah I noticed that McAfee was taking a little more time than Norton to load (I'm talking about the Internet Security Suite off course). But McAfee is a really great protection.

Extensible and professional platform :D

With Firefox on my PC here at home, GTP works just fine, but with Internet Explorer on the PC's at school, I get the same pause that hideyourface described...

I've been getting this too, it's infuriating to say the least and causes me to visit less than I used to, however I've also noticed that the GT4 part of the forum has slowed up recently in that there are less "new" threads and more and more "many page" threads. People are going over old ground, perhaps there's nothing new to say about GT4 anymore and it's time for me to leave until GT5 is out?

I used to get it on the Default style/theme, but I do not get it on the GTP lite theme. The computer would freeze for about 1-2 seconds. And it is not like i have an slow computer either, as it is an brand new Packard Bell iXtreme 1907 with 2GB ram, 3.4GHz Processor, 2x200GB HDD's, 250MHz 256MB ATI Radion 9550 GFX Card.

Yes, something is going on at the moment with our server. I'm investigating as we speak (or read?).

I haven’t noticed any slow loading (probably because I’m only on 56k, anyway). However I have had a number of time-outs…
