In association with the British International Motor Show, Autocar magazine organized the first “London Speed Record”. The Brits got together a number of various sports cars including a BMW M6, a Mercedes McLaren SLR, a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and a Holden Maloo Ute.

Each vehicle was given a rolling start and the length of the City Airport’s one-mile runway in which to set the fastest time, 3 runs per vehicle. Cars entered the main runway via a slip road at 70-80 mph. The speed, officially timed, will be put forward as an official Guinness Book of Records entry for the London Land Speed Record. The winner was the Mercedes McLaren SLR which managed to go up to 175.7mph

Comments: "It was absolutely breathtaking and a fantastic feeling to set the record in a British-built car," said Autocar’s magazine’s editor at large Sutcliffe, which organized the attempt.

"The McLaren has the power, the technology and the stability to hit those high speeds with incredible control," added Sutcliffe. "This is the fastest any production car has ever been driven legally in London".

Richard Gooding, Managing Director, London City Airport said "It was certainly an interesting transformation from runway to racetrack. The cars certainly reached maximum speed and looked as if they were going to take off, it was great to see".

The HSV Maloo did pretty well considering what it was up against.

I would have to ask the person that wrote it.
Why? All you have to do is order the cars high to low.

Like this:

Mercedes McLaren SL - 175.7 mph - 282.5 km/h

Ford GT - 174.3 mph - 280.3 km/h

Corvette Z06 - 167.0 mph – 268.5 km/h

Alpina B5 - 155.4 mph – 249.9 km/h

Shelby Daytona Cobra - 159.7 mph - 256.8 km/h

Duck: check the Shelby in your list - it ought to be ahead of the Alpina and Bentley.

You sure you want me to do it like that?

They should have also tested the SL63 or SL65 in my mind, or instead of the SLR, as that car is alot more expensive than the others.

This has to be the most redundant record I have ever seen. Why?

Too drive very fast down a runway? You don't need a reason, just an excuse. "I'm doing this to set a record" sounds better than "It's fun and I felt like it." Duh! :)

no on else mentioned it either. The would be car buy would probably choose something other than the not so easy to obtain $450,000+ SLR+ rarity primuim. You could buy all those cars for that..... minus the Bently that is:)

Coming from somebody who apparently has no clue about what those cars can do. I don't think 175mph is the SLR's maximum speed. ;)

If they had the Veyron, they wouldn't have to bother with 8 other cars.

This isn't a serious record by any means. It means absolutely nothing at all. I'd call it a publicity event, but I fail to see for what...

To show that a British built car was the fastest I guess. Even though it carries a mostly German name and is sold as a Mercedes. Funny that the GT was just a couple mph behind with a considerable power deficit. Considering that they got onto the track via a taxiway while going 70-80mph, simply a different line getting onto the runway could have made or broke those few mph. Plus, the SLR is an automatic. :yuck:

when will this be in the magazine? could be an intresting read,
strangely enough the slr also holds the uk unoffical speed record at 207mph but the police couldnt keep up to verify it

Actually, the SLR is very easy to obtain given the money.

McLaren is still in a contract with Mercedes-Benz to build 2500 more SLRs, the primary reason behind the new 722 upgrade.

The Bentley probably shouldn't be in here either given it's a luxury sedan worth $164,000.
