Smart TV Box Or PS3

Lots of manufacturers are now offering Smart TV media boxes for TV's which don't have it built in and I was thinking of buying one. They do the basis like app's, rentals and catchup services as well as web browsing and media playing.

Thing is a have a PS3 which already does catch up TV quite well and some of that other stuff. Basically should I wait to see if the PS3 gets full app functionality like Google TV software down the line or should I buy a smart TV box now?

If your hoping on the PS3 getting 3rd party apps like google tv Robin, i think your in the wrong place personally... As your in the UK, i'm sure your aware of all the catch-up tv services as well as the LOVEFILM service. I'm not sure how the love film thing works but i'm pretty much always using the catch-up services. As for web browsing, well, i hate it on the PS3, thats what my Macs and iPhone are for :) On the media playing front, what kind of media are you looking at? Locally stored or through a network? As for this, i use PS3 Media Server which is think is Mac, PC and possibly Linux compatible but i'm not 100% sure there. I use these all the time and the integration with iTunes and iPhoto is fantastic as far as i'm concerned. I can't say how well it works with windows but if its similar to the Mac version I'm sure that it will be great if you want to wireless share your media. Personally, i can't see much point in getting something like an Apple TV or Boxee box, i would instead use PS3 Media Server.

Well its been widely reported that its extremely likely Google TV is coming to PS3 to replace its browser and add app support. All of Sony's Smart TV's are powered by Google. Its just not known when it will happen.

Its just down to whether these stand alone boxes are any good compared to the PS3, has anyone got a Smart TV or box?
