Snow at Special Stage 7 in online mode... wait what?

I was once in a server at Special Stage 7. Insteed of rain, snow was falling. Yes, snow, not the obvious thin rain drops but snow falling slowly to the ground just like in any other snow stage. The track was just wet as usual, no snow.
How did the client did this?
Normally the snow is grayed out as a option.

ya, i was playing in the snow one too.

ya I saw that too. didn't seem to collect on the ground though.
