So, I failed The Written Test To Get My Learners Permit today.

My dad was also a horrible driving teacher; his method of teaching involved telling me how every little thing I did wrong could potentially kill someone...

My advice is to go to a driving school as soon as possible. They really helped me become a safer driver.

My dad gets this tone to his voice, like if I mess up it's all over with. He waits til the last minute to tell me things and then expects me to execute his orders with miltary precision and if I don't then it's fuss and crticize. I thinkn starting out with a manual was just tooooo much stuff at one time to deal with. I got to get the basics down with an automatic before I start in with the manual

I also went driving for the very first time. What a nerve-racking experience. I had never done anything remotely close to driving except for sitting behind the wheel of a parked car and playing gt3.

Heh heh… my first "driving lesson" was my dad telling me to jump into our manual-tranny Ranger when I was 12 and expecting me to know how to work it (which I didn't—I didn't even know you had to put the clutch in when starting the car, and I had no concept of the "catching-point"). That was a fairly hairy ride.

Eh, I'd say you should learn on the manual first, but not on the road. Go drive around in circles in a parking lot for a while first. Then go to an empty area and drive around. Residential areas are good, best are business areas on weekends/holidays. Be able to get up into 3rd gear and slow back down for a turn before you actually go out into traffic.

Well, that's my advice. I learned on a manual first and I thought it was absurdly easy to use an auto after that. But, I could see where people would have problems forgetting things moving from an auto to a manual.

As for learning from parents....most people say that it's hard to learn from parents. I learned from my dad and didn't have a problem though. If you start out in a parking lot/empty street, there won't be much to get yelled at for. If you still have problems learning, I'd suggest getting a relative or friend to teach you. I wouldn't suggest using the "driver training" programs to learn though. Around here, my driver training was to just drive around for 2 hours in a jetta. And....they aren't going to teach you to drive a manual (at least not the company I did it with). Knowing how to drive before taking driver's training is a lot better, in my opinion.

Passed mine yesterday. It's two 20 question tests, one with roads rules and another with signs. Only missed 2 questions this time.
 
I'm taking my Learners Permit test tomorrow. It's 40 questions, 20 road rules questions and 20 road signs questions. I've heard the maximum you can miss is 8. The road signs part is super easy. On a test online I got 39 out of 40 questions correct. The road rules part is kind of hard though. If I pass, then it'll be really close to failing. :sick:

But you from Florida too? trust me the test was insanely easy as long as you don't choke like my older brother did his first time. I managed to pass it first try no problem and no studying. Its all a test of nerves in my opinion.

I looked at the date and the thread title and I thought you failed it, lol. Good luck, I'm in Florida as well and it's extremely easy.

Now when you fail the driving portion is when you should feel stupid. When I failed my first time I was getting used to driving my mom's van and was super nervous so I blanked and forgot how to three point turn in their weird little driving course. I apologized and told the lady I was really nervous, the book tells you specifically not to say that you're nervous, lol.

+1. People whinge when 200 threads about the same subject are put up (ie. GT5 forum) but when someone has the sense to actually USE the search function for something, regardless of how old it is, they get mocked and put down for doing so.

It's a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. :indiff:

When do you turn 16 Mig? Good luck with the test, it has been my dream since I was a little boy. I have already driven on private property but still 2 years till I get mine :/.
 
Wow, you guys are allowed to fail that much questions and still get your permit? here in Portugal you can only fail 3 out of 30, and if you fail, you need to pay again a lot of money to retry it :crazy:

Also, you guys are lucky, here only at 18 you can drive :P

I turn 16 in May. I've waited 7 months to get my learner's permit. If I had gotten it 7 months ago I could get my driver's license in a couple of months. Turns out since I'm not 18 years old I have to wait 1 year 'till I get my driver's license. It's all good, though. I have plenty of time to practice and sharpen up. :D:tup:

Yeah that's the crappy part about Florida. I was lazy and took the permit test when I was 16, so consequently I wasn't able to get my license until I was 17, and I still had to wait a bit more after that but that was due to financial problems.
