I notice that in the last few months the way I describe my job has changed and before someone attempts to call me out on this I should explain. Most recently I gave a post in the GT5:Prologue thread about sales vs. production, which is way off from me talking about data coordinating a month or so ago.

At the beginning of this year I was the head of a special project in production. This was a project that I had formed nearly to years before and was completely successful. In February I was asked to head and start a new project because I had so far shown competence in my ability to do this. I started the new project and everything on my end went great. Technical and other issues nearly doomed the project but nothing on my end went bad. Then in May I was asked by one of the executive officers to take on the data coordinator position which had just opened up. I was only mildly decent with Excel but I did it as I am not one to shy away from a pay raise. This position put me in direct contact with the executive management of my company. I worked on this until the supervising position of the department I was working on the projects in opened up. I looked at it and realized that out of all possible candidates I had the best qualifications, so I applied. Little did I realize that the executive officer who had asked me to do the data coordinating actually used that position as a management training position.

So, as of the beginning of this month I became a full-fledged member of management with an actual salaried, as opposed to hourly, position and am the head of a department with 35 people. This is a job I have been wanting and working towards for a couple of years now. I managed to get here by hard work and not stabbing a single person in the back. The employees under me all respect me and many had come to me, before it was announced that I had the job, saying they wanted me to apply for it because they want to work for me.

I haven’t said a word on here before now because I am not one to brag. Well, I brag to family and close friends, but they would be offended if I didn’t. So, when recently I have disappeared for a day or two while in the middle of a debate and blamed work this is why. I honestly have days now where I don’t even get time for lunch and then work late. A month ago I was lucky to get more than 15 work related emails in a day. Now I have between 60-100 waiting for me when I first walk in the door. While that sounds like it can be stressful I actually love this.

Anyway, I just want to prevent any suspicions from getting started and maybe use this as an example to some of the younger members coming into the workforce that hard work and a good attitude can get you places. This is my third new position in less than a year and in the four years since I have been with this company I have increased my pay by nearly 25%. On top of all that I am happy with myself and the direction of my career, which is more than reward enough.

Very nice! Congratulations 👍

The Official Opinions Guide hasn't had a new addition in a long time.. shall we add something like: "If you're getting beat down in a debate, you can just pull an FK and say 'uh, I got promoted'"? :D

In all seriousness, the first thing I realized when I stepped into middle management is those Dillbert cartoons tapped to the side of people's monitors are now about you. :scared:

I couldn't help but say "lucky man" to myself when I read your post. Definitely a case of what effort you put into your work can get you to where you want, but from what I have heard from many family members and friends, this doesn't happen very often...

So congratualtions!

Fixed that up for you.

I actually had an internship in a much larger company with a lot more money where backstabbing and sucking up got you moved up much more. That combined with no one who had been there more than 10 years stayed married made me decide it was not the place for me.

Honestly when I first started here I thought it was just a resume builder, now I am bringing in new hires. It just turned out to be a good fit.

SO what're you getting all together? Does this mean fast cars? :D A nicer VW?

Wow thats rather inspirational. I wish I could get out of my dead end job, I put in alot of effort and I don't get much out of it, free movies at most..

Foolkiller, best of luck with the new position, hopefully one day I can 'brag' about an awesome promotion I got!
;)

So I finally know...... "pwning" means getting your butt kicked. :p

Congratulation, you animal! Just don't overwork yourself. I've known couple of people who've taken management positions, but decided to quit after dealing with unbelievable workload(and of course, the politics) for a year or two.

I know you gonna "pwn" though(in the "real" meaning :D). Best of luck to ya, Steve. :)👍

I wish it were that much. Nicer VW, that means an Audi, right?

The most I will say is that after this position I could not be married and be considered a lower-middle class household. With my wife however we are firmly situated in what I call the middle-middle calss. More than enough to not struggle but not enough to blow money.

In all honesty, for what I do I probably get underpaid compared to the median income of middle management, but my health benefits are excellent. With our cheapest plan I barely pay anything. I had a three day hospital visit a couple years ago and all I paid was $300, my insurance paid nearly $25,000. In comparison, my wife's insurance plan offered through her government job would have charged her 20%, or $5,000. Considering I have a heart condition and that the possibility of surgery (I've already had two) is never far off I am getting paid a lot more than my paycheck shows.

Hey, I got free movies when I worked for a movie theater. That was a blast.
