So, I was driving home today...

I was taking my old VW Beetle out for a spin today to make sure everything was still good, as I was planning to sell it this month. About 5 blocks from my house, it randomly died, and I look back to see smoke pouring out of the engine bay!

Needless to say, I pulled into a parking lot immediately, but the fire was already well underway. Luckily, there was a Fed-Ex driver and a tow-truck driver right behind me when it went up, and both stopped to lend the aid of their extinguishers, which when combined with the one I keep in the car & one from the pharmacy who's parking lot I was in were able to put the fire out right before the fire department showed up.

The car is in pretty rough shape...

Needless to say, I'm a bit gutted. This was my first car, the one that got me through high school & college... I was planning to sell it since I just bought the BMW to be my daily driver, and I was looking forward to it finding a good home somewhere.

What can you do though eh?

Happened to my dad with our old Crown Vic. We were planning on selling it, even had a buyer coming in to look at it, until we god side swiped by a lady speeding on the yellow divide while my dad was trying to take a left. Needless to say, the car was junked.

Ouch. Hope you get it all sorted soon - just one of those things with Beetles sadly - a few odd factors can result in that sort of thing.

:( That's terrible. I'd also like to know what you're going to do with it. I'm not knowledgable on car fires, but to me that doesn't look like it would've completely destroyed the car.

Damn that is terrible. Hope you can get it sorted out.

Wow, she was clean too eh? Such a shame when nice cars like this have problems. :( Good thing nobody got hurt though.

Agreed, it could have been much much worse. Glad you made it out ok man, if I was you I would invest some money into it to get it cleaned up and looking and more importantly, performing, the way it was before.

Thanks guys 👍 and yeah, I'm fine so it worked out better than it could have I guess.

As far as what I'm gonna do with it now, I'm not really sure. I have to wait to hear from my insurance company before I do anything, since I don't know (but assume) if they're going to total it out, and if they do how much I'll get for it or how much it will be to buy it back...

At this point, it's just wait & see. Hopefully I'll have a better idea of what to do early next week.

Awful thing to happen, and a shame on such a nice and unique car. I wish you luck with the insurance company and I hope repair prospects turn out better than expected.

Too bad it wasn't a Prius.

The car knew it was getting traded for a BMW and didn't want to live anymore.
^^ There's your problem.

I'm sorry to see what happened, but I'm glad to hear that you're alright. Best of luck on dealing with the insurance companies.
