So I'm Getting Into Time Trials - Fuji Speedway

Hello all,

I'm a big time lurker here, I think this is only the second time I've posted but I check the site everyday.

I've recently been getting into GT5P in a big way. I bought a G25 not too long ago and found the transition really tough. I left it for a while (out of frustration!) but I set it up again about a month ago and now I'm playing everyday.

The thing I've really gotten into is the Time Trials and I'm just looking for a bit of advice really. Now, I know not to expect to be No.1, there are some fantastic drivers out there (many on this site) but I just can't work out how I can be 3-4 seconds off lap records.

My highest ranking is 103rd in the Aston Martin DB9 on the Fuji Speedway (Standard physics... I'm a noob :P), I think my time is 1.51.3?? I'm really proud of that, I know it's nothing compared to most here but what the hey, my aim is to get in the top 100.

...Yes, I was annoyed when I saw I was 103rd!

So a few questions:

What's the best way to take turn 3? I feel it's an important corner and one I find difficult. I think I'm losing time there, I generally stay in 3rd (with no traction control) and try to kinda drift it round

I'm not using the clutch, I haven't mastered it yet. If I can, will my lap times improve by much?

Regarding the penultimate corner, is it better to brake early and wide and cut in for better exit speed of should I try to stick to the apex? I ask this because I realise this track is all about exit speed.

So yeah that's me, not a great driver trying to make his mark! Any advice regarding that track would be helpful. I want to see that ghost far away in my rear view mirror!

Hello man, try the awesome Weekly Racing Series, it's the GTP Time trial competition, after the events you can download the replays of the fastest drivers and try to find a better line through a given track.

I think you are referring to turn 4 and 5, actually, the 100 R section, not turn 3, the Coca Cola turn which is a fairly straightforward left-hander. It's two turns! That's what most people overlook and where they screw up. Study the map and you'll see what I mean. Setup the first apex to exit at a speed that allows you to exit really tight out of turn 5. Don't maximize exit speed at turn 5 and come out real wide or you'll lose more time than you gained at the hairpin. Study lap replays from in car views to see how the fast lappers do it. You'll see little variance in how the TWO turns are approached. Good luck and fun time trialing. It is, indeed, one of the greatest features of the game in my opinion. A purist's retreat! :-)
 
Thank you both for your advice, I've gained some good news and bad news though!

Good news: I've got my top 100 place (88th) with a 1.50.7??

Bad news: I've had a look at the fast lapper's replays and I can see the big difference, handbrake turning. I just gave it a go, it wasn't pretty! That level of judgement will require some practice I think.

Zootallures, thanks for correcting me, it is indeed two corners, I'll try and put your advice into practice.

A purist's retreat? Very true!

Handbraking is something you see a lot of at the standard level of physics because of all of the understeer. Switch over to pro physics. It's so much more fun, albeit challenging. Standard physics always feels like controlled chaos mixed with a lot of luck, as opposed to realistic driving technique. View some pro physics replays and you'll see a whopping difference. BTW, were you watching a replay of UncleJun? He does tons of handbraking and has a lot of top times for standard physics laps.
 
Ah yes, time trials. It's great to be able to compete with the exact same car, with the exact same setup. Other than the G25/27 clutch advantage, you know it's just down to the driver.

As mentioned above, switch to professional physics. You'll hate it at first, and no doubt be slower, but ultimately you will be much faster. I can't stand standard physics, I can never get the car to do what I want it to do.

The top 10 replays are a huge resource. Don't just chase the ghosts, download the replay and watch the in-car view to see what gears, braking points and corner speeds they are using. This alone has improved my driving skill the most.

This is some of the best advice you'll get, I improved my GT Academy times a lot after downloading EDDSKILL's replays & watching with "in-car view to see what gears, braking points and corner speeds" he was using.
 
i was in a similar position to you, only using standard physics being a bit hesitant at pro, but its so worth it. the satisfaction of getting things right in pro physics is far greater than standard.

it took me a while to get the hang of it because the 2 are polar opposites but now im winning the fuji 750p race with pro which is a huge improvement for barely being able to finish the race when i started on pro.
