Well, because of my "exceptional" GCSE results I have been offered a position on a BTEC National Diploma. Which is aimed at the management side of the Catering & Hospitality industry. I'm thinking it through, going to get plenty of research on it, etc. But I am so happy at the moment, permanently smiling. Equivalent to 3 A-levels, as opposed to the NVQ level 1 I am doing at the moment.

:) More like :D

👍

Just bake lots of shortbread, you'll pass with flying colours.

I'm into my 2nd week at 6th Form and I'm knackered, the minute I get home I just sleep for about 2 hours... At least homework isn't too bad (yet). Anyway good luck on your course!

So you're going to be a qualified couch potato?

Got some more insight into the course today (it's induction for one more week). It's slightly heavier than the NVQ but it is more business based rather than cooking based (or should that be "baste"?). It'll be 4 days a week until Christmas, when it is about 2/3 days a week. That doesn't bother me though.

Could someone tell me what something like this would compare to in the states? I tried Wikipedia-ing it and from what I've read, the British educational system looks ridiculously confusing.

A-level? Sixth form? Whaaaat?

This. I've just started my second year of ND software development and I'm still in "holiday mode" so need to get used to getting up early again.

Sixth form is the name of the college which people go to after school. For pupils aged 16-18, generally. You can take A-Levels but you can also take BTECs.

Mine is the BTEC National Diploma, which you'll find at Level 3. Do you recognise the, Doctors, Hons, Masters bits? They are quite good descriptions on the left side.

Sixth Form days are more structured like traditional school days, as in you stay on the campus from about 8:30am to 4:00pm. Colleges often teach the same syllabus as Sixth Forms but have a more open timetable and they offer courses for those who are less suited for academic subjects. After about two years of A-levels/BTEC, students then apply to Universities.

Basically the British educational system looks like this:

1. (5-11) Primary School
2. (11-16) Secondary School (High School)
3. (16-18) Sixth Form/College
4. (18-XX) University

I just finished my 2nd day of 2nd year Sixth Form, uni applications looming so i was a litle worried, then i found out i dont need to be in college til 11:30 3 times a week and go home at 11:30 on another day, happy days :)

I'll be finishing at about 8pm on a Monday. Hmm, might need to get some lights for the bike...

Edit: Scrap that, anyone got a candle?

I know, over here we just have primary school then secondary school then college/university. So much simpler!
I'm starting a physics degree within the month, should be interesting, do you think there will be much hard maths?? :dunce:

@Sureshot: Instead of a candle, have you thought of a car maybe.

I've been stuck with buses, don't complain  Then again im upgrading to a 250CC dirt bike (getting some road tyres for it to) in the next month or so :)
