To start, is "bought" the right word? Or rather "to purchase", it sounds so weird right now...

Anyway, let me introduce how my dad got himself so far to buy one:

A few years ago, when we still lived in Belgium, my father was having plans for moving to Norway for a long time. Mainly because the people said to him that he would be allowed to start his own company, a company where he would be flying an airplane. I don't know exactly how he got it into his head of becoming a pilot but it has been popular in our family. My dad's father was a pilot himself, my dad's brother is a pilot at DHL and flies with big Airbusses.

Anyway, in just 9 months, my dad had obtained a basic license, restricted to privat use only and one propeller, no turbo planes only as well. So by the time we got into Norway, my dad was tremendously exited about starting the little company (though he was restricted to privat use only, he obtained those company rights later on). My dad went to the owner who brought up those plans but suddenly, he acted like he never heard of those plans (duchman of course...No offense!). Of course, my dad was angry about that, so for a year, discussions had been going on, and on. However, by searching up some documents and information, we found out that the owner of the hotel and airstrip (correct word?), recieved milliones of kroners for investment, yet he never used them. Instead, he put them in his own pocket...

Anyway, we got the community so far to start up a "Flyclub", everybody wanted to have it in our community as since 1951, number of citizens in our village have been going down ever since (1,700 in 1951, 1,400 in 2005). Everybody is glad someone finally makes the step to try and make Fyresdal, that's our village, more attractive to tourists.

The little plane my father has bought, or purchased, is a Cessna 177 Cardinal. That's how it's called as far as I know, I tried to search for more info and found out that our plane is the "177-RG" model. Greycap or Duke may be able to identify the airplane once I got some pictures of it uploaded. As I'm typing this, my dad's about to leave from the airport with it. That airport is 6 hours driving from here so it'll take at least 30 minutes with bearing in mind that Norwegian roads are NOT straight.

There's always the thought that something could happen to him but I try to look at it positively, like for example that this is a chance to spend even more time with my dad and who knows, I might even discover wether I'll be a pilot or not soon...

Wow that cool man. I have always wanted to be an airplane pilot but I don't (at the moment) have the resources to do anything. I wish you guys the best of luck the the company.

On a similar note, my father-in-law is building his own plane.

Known as a "Whitman Tailwind". He also owns a Cessna 175 (I think). Owning a plane is a very exiting adventure. I'll stick with flying in the big planes though. Little ones are a bit too bumpy for me.

My kid brother just got a license last year. He's pretty thorough, careful and pretty well cordinated, when it comes to operating machinery and stuff, so I'm not too worried.

Anyways, good luck to your dad, BT. 👍

If I hit the lottery, I'd get my private license in a heartbeat. Assuming I survived rally school.

Congratulations! Planes are cool and fun. DA, I was 21 before I was ever in a plane large enough that I couldn't reach the controls.

Great, look forward to pics. 👍

As would I.

Is it that expense over there? It isn't too bad here, at least not as much as a drivers license which costs a rediculous 2,000 dollars here :grumpy:

Anyway, my dad is still in Bergen, he needed to fly more hours before he wasn't sure enough to bring it home. I called him yesterday because I was worried he still wasn't back and he hadn't called but he did not plan that he needed to fly so many hours with it first to take it with him so I guess the plane won't be here untill next week :grumpy: The weather's good at the moment, cloudy but no strong winds, something which is very dangerous in our village since it's surrounded by steep mountains. A few years ago, a Cessna, one of those planes which can land on water, nearly smacked into the mountain because it somehow managed to fly far too close into the mountain...Weird...Anyway, I hope the weather doesn't get any worse, otherwise we'll have to wait even longer 👎

If you are an inexperienced pilot flying a small plane, I'd think good weather is crucial. You should tell your dad never to take any chances, play it safe.

He does that, last year, we went on a little trip with a Cessna 172N (if I remember it correctly). When we were about halfway, my dad suddenly said "We'll have to go back, it's raining over there, those winds could throw us upside-down!" At first, I didn't see anything but upon closer look, you could definitly spot the area where it was raining, you could easily grab a pencil and draw that area, it was beautiful though 👍

A pilot with a PPL is not even allowed to fly with bad weather.

If your father decide to fly to Belgium and land at the "Keiheuvel" in Balen, let me know.

He is allowed to fly in bad weatherm he is not allowed to fly above the clouds...Anyway, whenever he flies in Belgium, he lands in Zwartberg 👍

That's what I wanted to say. If you don't have an IFR, you're not allowed to fly into the clouds and at night.

Would that be this airfield?

I didn't know there was a airstrip over there. I was wondering where those planes landed that fly over the kart and cross circuit in Genk :)

That's the one 👍

The Cessna 177 Cardinal RG II has arrived!

So after months of negotiation, it's finally here. We'll be trying to get airborn tomorrow, though it's gotten very cloudy today. The interior looks fantastic compared to others I've been in (Cessna 155, 172N, Piper, etc.). If I get to fly that plane, even for that split second, it'd be one of the most awesome days in my life so far!

Looks nice.
how many seats are in there?

richard hammond
It looks like somthing you see poking out of a skip

how dare you say that richard!

it looks mighty fine to me

Awesome, looks like you are going to have lots of fun.

Nice plane. I've always liked the single engine Cessnas I've been in. And that one looks to be in tip top shape.

I've been around planes my whole life.. my dad was a flight instructor for some 35 or 40 years, had a private license for nearly 50, till his health crapped out on him. Owns a couple of planes and a hanger. His favorite plane was the SkyMaster from what I know, and its a good high altitude pressurized plane.

I should've gotten myself a private license when I had the chance, though costs of maintaining a plane in this country are absurd with the annuals that its generally cheaper just to pick up an airline ticket...

They are lots of fun, and enjoy! Flying a plane is quite cool, but riding in a aerobatics plane is even more, as doing loops and barrel rolls is truly awesome.

Seems like lots of fun 👍 I wish I can fly a plane one day
so are you planning to get a private license as well?
anyway your dad's plane looks like the Dodo from GTA

This one's bigger. The Dodo would be a Cessna 172, with the 2-blade propeller. This one has 3 so it's much quicker. It's a 4 seater, but with a lot more leg space than a 172, something which I hated in a 172 since I'm 1m 90cm. tall...

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll ever be a pilot myself, the interest in it isn't too big at the moment though it has started to grow on me ever since dad started with it 👍
