From the sound of it, a lot of folks here already know the answer. But, for those who do not (like me before I researched it) here it is:

What is a Sileighty?

What's the point of this thread? If you want to explain what a SilEighty is, actually explain it instead of just posting a link to Wikipedia.
 
Just a picture of a Sileight if someone has one handy to through in here. It's a question I've been meaning to ask someone and finally remembered. I doubt I'm the first person around here to hear the name and not know what kind of car it is.
 
Actually, i always wondered what that Sileighty is. It was always stuck in my head, cause of its name, didnt know its called that because people used parts from another car on one car, which merged into a name combination of the 2 cars :sly:

I remember it from a magazine guide to GT2 (how to get a Nismo 400R in no time at all including what races to go in with what car).

Then i was like 'oh yeah' when i watched initial d for the first time a couple of months ago. However when i got it on GT5 i had forgotten that its only 197bhp as standard! :yuck:
 
If you aren't well into Nissan modding then you won't know what it means. But for decades it has been a popular japanese conversion of the S13 180SX (Hatchback with flip headlights, reference "USDM '89-'94 240SX Hatch"). They take the 180SX and slap on the front end of the S13 Silvia (Coupe with static mounted headlights, no USDM reference). 'Sil'via + 1'80'SX = Sil80 aka Sileighty (unofficial car, never actually in production). The car itself was produced in Japan from brand new 180SX's by the Nissan dealerships they were at, where they would have the Silvia front ends swapped onto the 180SX (complete bolt-on job). It has been reported that only 500 were produced this way before Nissan corporate of Japan layed down a hammer, and the few dealerships involved ceased to do this. Afterwards, the 'mod scene' of Silvia and 180SX lovers started swapping their front ends themselves.

If you would like some pictures of such cars, just google Sileighty/Sil80. If you are in the US, then just google "S13 Silvia conversion". It's an overly common front end swap.

On a side note, too bad GT5 doesn't have any S14.5 Silvias in the game like my own personal car. (S14 Silvia with S15 Silvia front end).
 
Now see? I'm glad I brought this up. This is interesting....especially the part about Nissan putting a stop to it effectively turning the practice into a completely aftermarket deal. This is the kind of discussion that makes particular cars interesting to me. Now, I have a reason to buy a Sileighty - it has a story of its own. Thanks!
 
^^ you got it brother. that is all.. you also have onevia ( Silvia with 180 front also same as USDM s13 240sx coupe)... s13.4a s13.4b s13.5 s14.5 etc etc

For those that don't know s13.4a for example is a s13 with an zenki s14 front end.
 
It's funny because I always found the front end of the Sleighty a little ugly but I like the look of the 180. Was this just for aesthetics or were there really that many people banging up their front ends?

Everything I've read said it was purely for economical reasons, cheaper to replace fixed lights than flip ups, and that's (apparently) why Nissan stopped it - They, by offering cheaper repairs, were practically encouraging drifting.
 
in the US, the Silvia front end wasnt offered, so regardless when I see someone with one on the street , it is kind of unique.

My first car was a 240sx fastback, and i eventually fixed it up, but i always kept the pop up lights, I favor the sleek shape over the blockly front end of the silvia.
