So, what the hell are they thinking

I'm sure it's a result of days, weeks, months of wind tunnel testing.

I'm sure it's quicker.

I'm sure they've worked out all the mounting and everything.

But the new Arrows still looks like someone gave it an uppercut.

lol @ dudley

looks interesting, I wonder if that'll be how their car looks in race trim...

What's so funny? All I see is a F1 car that belongs to a team that brought up the rear last year. :)

The car's almost completely unbranded. Look for a production paint job soon.

But I agree, the painted front wing mountings going to the black wing look like some OTT moustache.

Yeah, we're still waiting for final paintjobs from Arrows, Jordan and quite possibly Minardi.

How can the driver see where he's going with that huge hump in front of him?

Ugly=Unique.

No wait, who am I kidding? Most of the current crop of F1 cars are ugly, and not unique.

My theory needs work.

I think you'll find if you look closely that's actually the driver's side impact protection.

I hope the Arrows is good - it will be a highlight to see Arrows beat Jaguar with last year's Cosworth!!

Seriously though - I think the narrow track GP cars look awful - if you want to see attractive F1 cars, look at the '93 and pre Imola '94 cars - they looked fantastic (apart from the Benettons).

Actually they are using the same spec Cosworth as Jaguar, although they won't recieve during-season upgrades in quite as timely a fashion.

the nose, from the side, looks like a badly made ships belly upside down, it even has a wood appearance. look at the most dramatic part of the change in angle, i think a peice of something is sticking out.

no, it's more as if the nose isn't lined up.

Of course none of us have a seven figure wind tunnel centre, so we've no idea if they've found something no-one else has, as opposed to just coming down with BSE.

I don't mind the high nosers--pre 1997 though. 1997, IMHO, is the best year for this current style period. I hate the grooved tires on these car.

oh, and the narrow track didn't start until 1998/99, I believe. If I remember correctly, it was part of the slowing and passing package with the grooves. Look where that got us ;)

however, I do agree--the pre-high nose cars are luverly! One of my faves is the '93 McLaren. Got a model of it in my room :)

Okay - think I got it figured out - I think it's a combination of the bigger mirrors this year and the tyre. Check this shot - the car's pretty conventional...

Actually, if you want an odd one check out the new Jordan...

Well they need to focus on getting the engine installed and working really. Plus with the front of the car being principally black, it's difficult to make out the shapes. That's a McLaren trick!

I suppose Arrows performance hinges on two things: how much of a positive impact Sergio Rinland has had on the design process, and how quickly they can get the engine installed and the car balanced, especially since they got the test engines so late.

Frentzen is blaming his rear wing failures on vibration, so they obviously have some work to do at the back of the car.

I seem to recall last year there was some talk of the Cosworth motor being quite rough (ironic Arrows should have these issues after the rather rough and ready Asiatech engine!).

That's pretty much been a theme right since the birth of Stewart GP...

Perhaps Arrows were expecting it to be better than the Asiatech, and so designed accordingly...

I really like the look of the new Jordan, which of course is designed by ex-Arrows Aero guy Hamidy.
