Sometimes I will type out a sentence, and realize I wanted it all in caps for humorous effect.

Is there any program that allows you to highlight a section of words, and convert their shape to caps?

If text can be converted back and forth to bold, italic, or underlined... I don't see why the technology would be any harder to implement. Each letter has a set undercase and lowercase, so it should be a quick thing to program... right?

Yes, it would be an easy thing to program but I doubt there is much demand for it, plus I doubt anyone wants to promote the use of all caps.

Sometimes I type something out and don't realize the Caps lock is on, so I have to retype the whole thing. It would be easier to just lowercase all the letters, and have the first letter still be cap.

Maybe I'm totally missing the point here... but Microsoft Word can do this quite easily.

Highlight your text, then go Format --> Font, and check the 'All Caps' checkbox. Or the quicker option os just to select your text and press ctrl+shift+A.

Tada.

edit:
@Delirious?, you could do this by creating a macro in Word with a little bit of VB. I've seen the code to do so before, I'm just trying to find it now.

Wow, now that is actually useful. I'm surprised I didn't know about that. It seems like it isn't common knowledge to me that this feature exists.

You can change things to ALL CAPS, all smalls, All Title Case, and normal sentence case in Word.

I don't quite trust that it doesn't add formatting to the text, so I don't use it much (extraneous formatting is the very devil in Word). But if you were simply C'n'Ping into a browser window, it should be fine to use that.

Now does anyone know WHY they are called upper and lower case?

wiki
The terms upper case and lower case come from the early days of mechanical printing. The individual type blocks used in hand typesetting were stored in wooden or metal cases, sorted by letter, with a separate box for each typeface (with majuscules and minuscules being stored separately). Historically the two cases were placed one above the other on a rack on the typesetter's desk and, by convention, the case containing the capitals would be above the box with the small letters, hence upper and lower case.

Just a piece of useless trivia for you all.

Useless maybe, but isn't that a pretty well known fact.

Just adding a small but important piece of information here...

The way to make it CAPS, smalls, Title, in Word, is to select the text and press Shift+F3. :)
