Something HAS to be done about the big-image problem

Seriously... this is getting out of hand, especially with all this next-gen stuff, and 1920x1080 screenshots being posted in threads.

As an example, go look at the Test Drive: Unlimited (TDU) thread in the Xbox360 forum. You have to side-scroll an entire screen to the right just to read what people are typing, because of the über-sized images being posted. And believe me, since all next-gen games support HD resolutions, this problem is going to get a LOT worse before it gets any better.

There IS an option or hack somewhere for vBulletin 3.0.7 that allows non-image posts to remain the same size as the user's screen. Meaning that you can read the ENTIRE thread WITHOUT side-scrolling, except for the actual images, which will remain full sized. I know this exists, because I frequent several other forums, all using vBulletin 3.0.7, just like GTP, and they all use this feature.

This is becoming maddening to the extreme, especially for those of us set to 100 posts per page, where this side-scrolling can last for weeks before finally going to page 2. And then some jackass on post 101 decides to quote one of the big images, which sets me up for another month of side-scrolling.

There IS a fix out there... and these forums desperately need it.

If people can't be bothered to use imageshack thumbnails, i think it's not a bad idea to either ban images over a cetain size, or to have an option in your user cp to select either your bandwidth and let vbulletin decide what to allow, or select a limit size for images in threads.

Get something other than Dial-up? :dopey:

:D nice....

but yeah it can be annoying having oversized images. Although with scroll mice you simply click and drag, so I'm not too fussed.

Yea i hate when people post huges pic too because then i have to scroll across and down to read posts and also it takes long to load :grumpy: .

What the hell does that have to do with anything? If you'd actually read my post, you'd see I wasn't talking about how long it takes to load them (since I'm on broadband, it takes only seconds), but rather the fact that you have to side-scroll to read every single post in a thread containing large images, even if only one post actually contains a large image.

As I said, there is vB code to fix this. I'm imploring the administration to make use of it instead of ignoring it. This is a problem that's NOT going to simply go away. And as Slick Rick demonstrates, I'm not the only one that's noticing this.

Yes, this is most definitely an issue that I am happy to report will be fixed in the next update on our site. With the size of our site, most of the current modifications which resize images would slow down the server or page rendering times of any thread with images. Our new design will allow individual posts to expand, while keeping the rest of the posts within the viewable frame of the browser window. Unfortunately I can't make use of this just yet because of the limitations of our current design. The new version of the site will be table-free and we will be able to take advantage of all that has to offer. :)

Yep, that's exactly the feature I was talking about. :)

In the meantime, please use the Report button (or PM me if I’m online) for posts with huge images – every time I see an oversized image, I always edit the post and change the image into a URL, so do please tell me if you see any. :) (Except in the photo gallery forums and threads, of course.)

I was going to ask about this issue this week, but it's good to know you guys are on it. 👍

Will the next version take adavantage of the instant quick-posting? I love that feature in some other boards that have the newest version of VB. They also have instant post-editing. All of these features would help people on 56K immensely. :)

I got DSL! :D
I’ll say it nicely just this once: Please stop bumping up old threads for your petty comments. This is the second time you’ve done this, and it’s nothing short of annoying.

Yes, it will.

Oh damn, is that like at UCP.com where if you edit your post it will just turn your existing post into an edit window? That would kick so much ass!

Jordan said that it would be released December in another thread… or maybe it was even this one.

EDIT: Beat me to it … what he said! ^

Yep, exactly like that. The technology is called AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And XML), and I have to agree that it is pretty cool!

Any ideas when the next GTP will be ready Jordan?
As Duck already pointed out, I don't know the exact date but it is getting closer every day. :)

Nice!! 👍👍

How bout UCP.com's philosophy of attachments? I don't know how bad that is for your expenses but it does speed up the site since it's based on images anyway. I like their system but I never really caught on to yours because your limited to how many pics... right? Only down fall with it is you can't organize pics unless you link pics which they don't like.

I'm not a member there, and I am not familiar with their attachment system.

Yeah well duh.
Actually, comments like this force me to push the release date back exactly 24 hours per comment characters.

That's seven more days now, sn00pie! Shut up!

 👍

Nice to see the next GTP include some lovely new features 👍

I do that with my girlfriend. Every time she mentions marriage, I push the date back six months.

Good news! We're getting married in August 3156!

So your bio-chemical reasearch has found you a way to live for a thousand years?

I hope you are not keeping this a secret.

Hehe, that made me laugh out loud here at the office and everyone looked at me funny.

And Jordan, good to see the new version is coming soon. 👍
