I was happily playing Vice City yesterday when my PS2 started making some grinding noises! I quickly turned off my PS2 and opened up the disc tray and luckily my game wasn't scratched. So i put my vertical PS2 into the horazontial position started back up the game and it did it again! It also gave me an error message saying that it had an error reading the GTA: Vice City DVD! I again took the disc out and looked at it and this time it had been scratched :banghead:!

So I decided to play some different games to see if it did the same thing, i played MGS2 and GT3 in both the vertical and horozontal postions and they both worked fine. So i put Vice city back in and it seemed to work then.

So when i got up this moring i started up vice city, and i played it for awhile, then the grinding noises came again, except this time they wern't so loud, so i just paused the game and with the game still running i took out the disc and put it back in, it seems to be fine now, but i play a little more today and see if it makes any more noises.

Any thoughts?

....sucks to be you.... j/k

Was there anything on the bottom of ur disk when u put it in? I put in a cd in my computer with a sticky note on the bottom (i didnt know it was there) and it messed up my whole cd drive it wouldnt read anything so i had to have it fixed

I would freak if that happened to my Ps2.

Don't worry, it will soon enough. It's been happening to a lot of people. I've probably seen 5 of these threads. :)

Grrrrrrrr! I had enough of those grinding noises to last a lifetime. But I fixed it so it can play blue-bottomed disks. :irked:

I have temper tantrums sometimes and i take it out on my stuff so far i've partly shattered my class covering the PS2, and broken the tray on my stereo, but im never gonna take it out on my beloved PS2;)

Why would you have temper tantrums? :p

I actually looked a little closer to my Vice City disc and i really don't think any bad damage happened to it. I think i was just freaking out that day. Since then i have just blown air like crazy through the vents and fan at the back to remove as much dust as i can and it hasn't done it since.

And my PS2 model Number is - SCPH-39001

You can't play it anymore or it just got scratches on it?

Both. Whenever i turn on the radio in the game, the game freezes.

But what if the car you grab already has the radio on? Does it still freeze?

I have to change it really quick. If i don't do it, then i move up a little and all the buildings, roads, cars, and details ahead don't load properly. Then i get either a "Loading..." or disc read error and the game stops.

That must suck. Get a game Doctor. It ruined a couple of of my PS1 disks, so I never tryed it on any of my PS2 disks. :p ;)

Well, I just called Sony and they walked me through (not that i really needed to be walked through it but) turing on the diagnosis for the PS2, then loading up my Vice City game, and then resetting it, and loading it up again, i'm not really sure what that did, but hopefully i get no more disc read errors.

well i don't use a vacuum, i just blow air through it (from my lungs) and i just do it everytime it looks like it needs to be or i'm bored.

Hiya everyone

I have been having some problems with my PS2!

It started making a grinding/shuddering noise when i first turned it on or pressed the disc eject button. When it happened with the dic button the disk paused before coming out.
Thought nothing of it, just assumed it was a 'quirk' and one of those things.
Recently its started making horrible noises when playing games. There are sort of like the grinding i heard previosuly, but sound more 'dodgy'. Also sometimes when this is happenoing the disc becomes unreadable. I have only noticed it when playing GTA VC & TOCA but to be honest ive not played much else other than those two.

I suspect that summats loose, but wondered if anyone thought any different, or had any ideas what could be loose?

The games are originals, all settings are correct.

Please help me if anyone knows anything.

Cheers

Ian, the excat same thing happened with my PS2 as you said, just phone up sony and tell them what happened and most likely they'll ask you to send it to them and they'll fix it free of charge, just phone them and they'll give you an address and everything, and you should have a fixed PS2 in about a week. Good luck.

Apparently there is a threat of a class action lawsuit so Sony is repairing PS2's with DRE's for free. You have to call them first and make sure you tell them you only use authorized products with your PS2 or you will be SOL.

I have a launch day PS2 and I had problems with it scratching discs. Sony repaired it at no cost to me, plus sent me a heck for my ruined game. I also continue to have DRE's from time to time. The best way to eliminate the DRE trouble is to wash your discs. DVDs have about 20 times more "tracks" compared to CDs and they will easily clog.

If you are having trouble with playing PS1 games and certain DVDs, try tilting your PS2 upside down, and then turn it on with the game already inside. I find this helps a great deal for me.
