There has been reports of major input lag drop after update on avforums:

ALERT: Some users have been having problems after update on one or two chanel texts so beware of this possibility. This problem is likely to fixed by sony on next update.

Can't find the link you mentioned on avforums.
Also, the update is only for certain models, there's no update for my W4500.

From the update for the W5500, the improvement listed is:

This software update will enable tuning of Digital TV Services on a signal distribution that contains certain types of TV signal combiner. For this upgrade to take effect please re-install the TV by initiating Auto Start-up.

Cheers. Makes sense now, I bought it at the end of last year, and thought 2009 for some reason.
