I am somewhat in disbelief. I receive my ps3 back today after being sent in for repair and well the only positive point is that it actually works. First off

a. I had requested sony to notify me (they have a sms service) when the ps3 is on its way to me. Never received any kind of notification

b. My ps3 had not had a single scratch in its life. I think it was repaired by a bunch of cats with the scratches that now appear on it

c. My dad walked outside (postman had not seen him) and he simply dropped the package from about 1m in the air.

d. The postman not only dropped the package, he simply turned around and walked away without needing any verification of delivery.

e. He left the package outside our front gate on the footpath!

I have tested the ps3 now and it boots and reads disks however one thing that I find different when loading/removing disks is that the mechanism that holds the disk makes a loud click. The 40gb I have here does not do that. I am probably being paranoid but wondering if anybody else has noticed if the 60gb launch models make a different noise to later models when inserting/removing disks.

To think that Microsoft could do worst to the 360 deliveries than just waiting for long periods of time for a unit.

Australia post employees don't care, though Sony should have sent it by atleast registered post.

I have used both the launch 60GB (mine) and my nephews 40GB PS3 side by side and I never noticed any differernt sound when loading and removing disks. There may have been but we (nephew and I) never noticed, I am pretty sure we would have as we often comment on how my DFP always sounded differernt to his DFP.

That's unbelieveable. Such disrespect for other people's property is shameful.

Was the PS3 well packaged? Even if it was, I'm sure a drop from 1m would do it no good at all. My 60GB PS3 sounds pretty much exactly the same as the 40GB I used to own. It certainly doesn't make a loud clicking noise...

3mm of cardboard was all that cushioned the ps3. Funnily enough there was fragile written all over the box. but the box was then covered in black plastic :S

I had wished I had seen the delivery guy arrive. I would have approached him and told him to take the package back.

To best describe the sound. The 40gb makes a kind of thud sound when it releases/grabs the disk. the 60gb makes more of a click. I checked with a bluray movie to see if the drive works and that the disk doesnt get scratched so that is fine. Hopefully it is either nothing to worry about or if it breaks it breaks within a few months.

I have just had a go with some car polishing products on my ps3 to try fix the scratches. Most are fixed now but it still isnt how i sent it to them. I'm not convinced it is my ps3 despite the serial number matching. The hdd had a screw that was slightly damaged (used wrong screwdriver) which now has no evidence of ever being touched (though the hdd was dusty when I am pretty sure mine wasn't). Also the inside of the ps3 is quite clearly all new. I remember mine looking a lot more dull inside.

Do you think maybe that is what they have fixed. Sorry for the obvious question but lol, do you think that is the case?

J-Pap, it sucks to hear the experience you have had with Sony and also your post service. People should really care more about doing their job properly and taking care of other peoples items. Especially in times like these were anyone can get sacked in an instant.

This is why I would try to avoid sending anything to Sony at all costs. Its very rare to get back the console you sent in because they send out the first fixed console of your type to the customer to reduce waiting time. Even if you serial number matches it is most likely that its your case (or a different case with your serial) with someone elses innards... a refurb unit.

That would be annoying to me if you got back someone elses stuff thats almost never been as well looked after as your own. Broken console or not. I don't think the parts inside your console would be all new because they don't even produce those parts anymore.

I have a 60GB and my mate has a 40GB, I swear his loads louder than mine but I don't there is much difference in the noise. If yours is clearly making an odd sound complain to Sony.

Oh and just out of interest did your console fail after you updated to 2.60? Because that did cause problems with quite a few consoles.

it wasn't immediately after updating to 2.60. It was well over a week later from memory.

It is very difficult to explain regarding the noise. Both systems have the same number of sounds it is just my 60gb makes 1 sound slightly different. What concerns me really more than anything is that I know that it is something that sony will most likely scoff at and dismiss or just send me my console back exactly the same if not worse than in the first place. As well as that I don't remember if my console was like that beforehand. I only noticed it as I knew it was dropped so was checking every detail of the console having another next to me to compare with.

I don't really care about the noise itself so long as I don't have to get my blu ray drive fixed in another year, or ever really. I didn't buy a console that would need 315AUD invested intermittently to fix. If it does happen though I will most likely undertake the job myself.

I am thinking to contact sony and request a new faceplate sent (a 60gb one specifically). While I did repair the scratches to the point they are no longer white and visible at any angle. They are still visible at certain angles. A word of advice to those with later models which have the playstation painted not embossed. DON'T POLISH YOUR PS3! it will remove the paint (i did this to my dinovo mini)

I think your story is disgusting.

I live in the UK. When mine broke almost a year ago, they had a replacement 60gig unit sent to me by a special courier and it was in a crate and padded out very well. The delivery guy needed my signature and handed it to me. All within a week too.

Why can't they provide this level of service worldwide? Obviously its not their fault the way he treated it but they should use a private company surely.

Do it, and tell them everything you are not happy about, like the postal service.

Sony simply should be using a courier for such an item. Not the national postal service.

That is exactly what happened in my case too, it was a little longer than a week in my case, but still very good. It was totally free too, although I believe they have recently stopped doing it for free for out of warranty PS3's.
I don't understand why this is not the case worldwide and if I were you I would definitely make Sony aware of your problems, as if something went wrong later down the line, you could then use this as evidence to get a free repair and the procedures won't be improved if everyone just lets them do this. I hope everything turns out well for you

Updates issues, even if they dont affect your system immediately, can appear weeks later as the corruption in the system spreads or is randomly triggered by an event such as installing / deleting something. Thats not to say outright that this particular problem was firmware but it could have contributed to the problem. I have seen a lot of Blu Ray drive issues appear on the net after this update, particularly with 60GB launch models. What actually did go wrong with your console?

If you really arnt happy with what you have recieved do go and tell Sony how you feel and request to send it back in. After all you paid for it to be fixed and the service seems to have been terrible. I would ask for another casing and for them to check the Blu Ray drive over. I suspect the reason why you recieved the casing you did it because they don't make them anymore (the ones with the embedded PS3 chrome lettering).

Hope this all gets sorted out for you. 👍

Robin.
