Sony Cuts PlayStation 2 Price to Compete With Nintendo
By ERIC A. TAUB

Published: May 12, 2004

LOS ANGELES, May 11 - The Sony Corporation cut the price of its PlayStation 2 video game machine to $150 Tuesday to match the competition from Microsoft's Xbox as it moved ahead with its plans to challenge Nintendo as a maker of hand-held game players.

The announcements came on the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, the annual computer and video game convention.

Nintendo, which has long dominated the portable game market, introduced a prototype for its next-generation DS hand-held model, which includes a wide range of additional features, like dual screens and voice recognition, intended to make game playing more compelling.

Sony, on the other hand, believes that high screen resolution and fast processors in its PSP portable will attract players beyond children and adolescents, now the largest users of portable video game players.

"The games available for portable game devices have not had enough depth and graphic experience to hold the older consumer," said Jack Tretton, executive vice president for Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The new PSP will have the same impact on the business as the PlayStation did on the console market."

Sony's PSP, to be introduced in Japan at the end of this year and in the United States and Europe next spring, will feature a wide-screen 4.3-inch diagonal L.C.D. display and be able to play movies and music videos in addition to games, according to Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

The new Nintendo DS system moves beyond its current Game Boy player to incorporate two standard-shaped video screens, to add voice recognition aimed at allowing players to instruct characters how to move, and to include networking so that players will be able to use WiFi hotspots to engage in remote Internet play. It will be more expensive than Game Boy, but Nintendo did not disclose specific prices.

"Today's gaming platforms are already photo-realistic," said Reggie Fils-Aimé, executive vice president for sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. "We wanted added functionality to increase the enjoyment of playing."

In the United States, the Nintendo DS is scheduled to appear later this year, before Sony's PSP introduction here. Nintendo plans to move into Europe and Asia next year.

Sony, meanwhile, announced that it has arranged a partnership with I.B.M. to develop a computer workstation intended to enable the creation of more realistic-looking video games in a shorter period of time.

The workstation will use the Cell processor, a device jointly developed by the two companies and Toshiba that should make it easier for entertainment companies to produce digital characters for movies and video games at the same time.

Okay, if they are now charging $150, then I bought my current PS2 new at Target for $129 last year, so they upped the price since I bought it. Amazing.

Thats good and bad at the same time, well its all good but bad for me since I got my PS2 when it was still around 500$ canadian.

The PSP is a shoe in for Sony. The one who should be worried is Nintendo. It will either flop completely or do really well. It is a must win for Nintendo or it will lose the only market that it's still competitive in.

He wasn't talking about the Gamecube!
He was talking about the handheld consoles(?) like the gameboy.
Nintendo only performs in that market.

ps2 doesnt need to compete with the GC. The GC SUCKS

Okay, if the Gamecube sucks then why is Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and Super Smash Brothers: Melee and Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2:Battle only available for that system and not the PS2. I think the PS2 and the gamecube are 2 pretty good system's. The Xbox is a another microsoft outcast...

Konami had a deal with Nintendo and Silicon Knights to develop the remake of MGS on GC. After all, Metal Gear all started on the NES, it was to pay tribute.

Sega also had a deal with Nintendo to port over it's Sonic DC games over to GC. Sega pretty much spread its collection of games evenly over all three consoles. PS2 got Vitura Fighter, Xbox got Jet Set Radio, Gamecube got Sonic.

Super Smash Brothers is a Nintendo game, of course it's on GC...

That is why those games are on the Gamecube and not others. Not because the GC is 'better,' but because Nintendo had deals with the developers to bring those games to the GC, the same way Sony and Microsoft have exclusives for their systems.

Nintendo isn't exactly competitive in the market of portables. They more or less have a monopoly in the market if you consider percentage of sales vs all other manufacturers in the same market. What they have to worry about is Sony coming in and destroying Nintendo's dominance. Hopefully it won't happen. I'd like to see some real competition between the two companies. The competition will mean more and better games for the rest of us (hopefully).

As for the ps2 price redux, it's primary reason is for Sony to coninue sales of the ps2. The problem is that the ps2 is the most popular console out there. Just about every serious gamer has one. Because of this, the ps2 has reached a sales peak. It's at the brink of losing sales because the product has reached maturity and everyone has one. With sales lagging, companies like Nintendo and Microsoft will get a larger percentage of unit sales per quarter. That's bad for Sony because most investors will look only at the sales of the previous few quarters rather than the history of a product and the company over an extended period of time

...wheee...I guess I learned something in all those business courses my school is making me take :p

I got the gt3 bundle and a memo card when it first came out, 334 dollars and 87 cents at eb games.

Isn't metal gear solid: snake eater being devolped on the PS2? I see all these ad's in mags and stuff .. Its not only on GC.....
Or is it just metal gear solid 3.. Which has solid snake eating snakes....

snake eater is ps2 only. Twin Snakes was created for GCN to pay homage to the original MG games on the NES

sorry im not up-to-date with pcs/consoles/games, im busy working on my car and getting it paid off
:)

In the states its like $150 and in Canada it will come around $199 and i have to add that the location of yourself makes me very uncomfortable, mainly because i do not have a sister and that you'll have to settle for my brother :(

IMO Nintendo exclusives are better then XBOX/PS2 Exclusives as a whole.... Metroid, Zelda and Mario will take some beating...

all consoles have their benefits, PS2 has many games (many crap ones as well....) XBOX has well HALO...

But theirs no point saying GC is crap, i got all 3 and like many games on each and im happy ;)
