I have the sony made hdd and i jus recently replaced it w/ a seagate and i find they dont work exactly the same. For starters the sony hd i was able to back up save games from my memory card on to it. I wasn't able to load from it to play a game but i was able to store the info on there so i could transfer the save back to the memory card if it got too full. Secondly games that require the hd such as FF11 wont even detect the hd so i can't even play it. And lastly the ps2 itself wont detect the drive in there. With the sony drive, when i started the system w/o a disk and went to the browser, there was a HDD icon jus like a memory card and i was able to browse what was on the HD. With the new drive i get nothing. I tried using the HDD utility disk to load all the info back on the drive but seeing how the new drive isn't detected it wont work. Have any of you using a maxtor come a cross this aswell? If anyone has had experience w/ both types of drives, feel free to chime in. Thanks

There is firmware on the Sony drives that we cannot obtain. That's why PS2s can recognize the Sony drives, but not any other IDE HDD.

Just copy FF11 over to the HDD using HDLoader.

So what is better to have a "other hd" or to have sony's?
Maxtor HDDs. The Sony one is a re-badged Maxtor, except it has a capacity of only 40GB, and 5400 rpm, with a 2MB cache. You can get any other Maxtor HDD (and I recommend Maxtor since they are the ones that actually fit into the PS2) that has a higher capacity than the Sony HDD, and is faster too (7200 rpm, 8MB cache, etc...)

Most IDE hard drives work with the network adapter. The only major brand that does not work is Western Digital. The molex and IDE pins do not match up with the ones on the network adapter.

Here is a list:
