Hey folks. I know there's been a thread about headphones in this price range before, but they really didnt leave anything answered, merely a barrage of "i have this and it's good."

I'm looking at the two mentioned Sony headphones, the MDRV150 (black) and MDRV300 (silver), and I was wondering which ones to get. I listen to a lot of music, I'm on my second iPod battery, goneaftermarket this time (I don't wanna hear anything about that, got it?). I like to listen to my muzak loud, so I don't want to get the cheaper ones and have to replace them in a year, but then again, I don't want the expensive ones and have to replace them after a year.

Is it worth the extra 30 or 40$ for the 300's over the 150's?

I'm planning on getting 'em Tuesday or Wednesday of this week, so I need to know relatively quick.

Are you sure the V300's are $30-40 over the 150's? Last time I checked they were $10 for the 150's and $33 for 300's... how much are the 300's there anyway? Are there any places that sell Sennheiser PX200's? they're good headphones, I'd recommed those over the Sony's.

I wouldnt' know, mine's V600. But seriously, if you can afford it, I'd go with more expensive model. I've had my headphone for over 3, 4 years. Lots of abuse, still no problems. 👍

Why not something like these? (a bit more in the same price range, I think...)

Epinions has a decent database for searching reviews on headphones, definitely worth a look when shopping.

 See the price in mine. :cough: 200s :cough:

I don't have time to shop online. It isn't worth it, they exepect me to pay a permium on their US prices, then gouge me for shipping, and then I have to pay duties when it gets here. Not worth the 3 weeks it takes to get here, either.

There is a Sony store nearby with the 150s for 30$ and the 300s for 60 or 70$.

But 10$ for 150s? You must be thinking of something else.

I also heard that the 600s aren't that good off of a normal source, like the iPod. An amp is sort of necessary. Is this true?

The PX100s are 79$ (Can, obviously) at Future Shop or The Source.

600's have been touted as the crappy version of the V6.

:odd: Where are you at? My site doesn't charge S&H and it's two day delivery... The proof is my dad's pair. If you're not in the U.S. I dunno then because I thought you lived here.

at $80, you should buy the Grado SR80 and nothing else :)

Oh yeah, the Grado's are excellent, though their styling isn't to everyone's tastes (though I love it). Grados sound better with flat pads.

I at Montreal, Canada. Hence the surcharges.

Like I said, I don't really have that good choice of what I can buy. There's very little selection on the shelves at Best Buy/Future Shop. The prices at the Sony store are the best for what they sell. So basically it's limited to the 150s and 300s. I don't want to look like a complete goof walking around with hugeass whole-ear headphones. I think I'm gonna go with the 300's, they seem pretty solid, nobody really has any complaints with them.

All of my prices are Canadian, by the way.

Well, I'd avoid Sony at least... I know that limits you're choices greatly but for the money there are much better phones. No where over there sells PX200s in the store? I know Best buy has those retarded white versions at least.

I've seen some other headphone models at the shops, but they're Sennheiser's mostly, which I passed off 'cause I had never heard of 'em before.

I'll first go to other stores before Sorny, last time I checked those places out, it was just after the holidays. Slim pickin's.

You'd regret that, Senns been around for.. ev.. er...

Like I said, I saw 'em and just passed 'em off, I had never heard of the company, and to be honest, they looked pretty cheap-o.

I will check out the PX200's though.

IMO Sony's have over-emphasized bass and poor definition in the highs. Grados have a lot of low end distortion.

I have Sennheiser HD497s (discontinued, paid $45 new), I like their sound better than the Grado SR80 or any Sonys I have tried. The Sennheisers are holding up better (about 4 months so far, no visible wear, about 4 hours usage a day) than the Aiwas I used to have. If I were to find fault with them, it is that the sound is a little "hollow" and lacking in the very lowest frequencies. But no distortion whatsoever even at painful volumes.

I think rock pop and classical sound good on the seinheissers while the Sonys are better at rap and techno.

Thats my 0.02.

The only Sony's worth my while are the R10's. I love the 4 thousand dollar coconuts. 👍

Stay away from all Sony's that come in that stupidass plastic case crap...i.e., ones that are sold in stores.

If anything, score yourself some Koss KSC-35's if you can find them. At 10 dollars, they're the best bang for your buck.

Emad, the SR80's suck without an amp. They're all fuddy-duddy and stuff.

AKG just came out with some new portable cans. You should check them out if possible. Remember: ALWAYS try before you buy. Give it your best proactive effort.

Read the posts: I don't have that kind of availability.

Sony is pretty much the only selection I have, the others are just what is left on the shelves.

The question at hand is also in the title and bold in the first post.

in that case, wait. The vast majority of Sony's dj cans are awful. Youl'll only be throwing your money away

Sennheiser and Grado are what the audiophiles use to enjoy music. :)

I've tried cheap Sony headphones, and they sucked. I'd definately go with the more expensive model, but I still wouldn't trust it with my bad experience with cheap Sony's. I ended buying the Sennheiser HD555's a week later and they are just great in every way, although probably a bit out of your price range.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have had a pair of Sony's before, they lasted forever. I still see a lot of people walking around with the same pair, after all of these years. But I will check out some other stores to be sure before going with the Sonies.

And I also don't want to walk around with huge-ass things on my head like a goof. I ain't no balla 'yo.

But, alas, you're posting on GTP, aren't you?

Hit up amazon.com if you must. I've gotten some KILLER deals on good headphones there. After all, I got my 650's at 270 dollars off.

I'm just warning you... Do not go with any type of storefront Sony DJ cans. They're just there for consumer/fashion whores. Storefront cans usually focus on style rather than sound. That is, quite obviously, a big no-no.

If you're going to be driven straight from an ipod, I'd just suggest getting your hands on some KSC-35's or PX100's open, or some PX200's or IEM's closed. Ultimate Ears and Etymotic are good. I'm not the hugest fan of Shure IEM's.

I just bought the MDR-V700DJ cans. They sound great.

But, what do I know? :indiff:

Maybe Amazon has better ionternational orders, but like I said, 95% of the time I get gouged because I live 25 minutes from the border.

And nobody has really answered my question (which is why I posted on GTP):
Sony 150s or 300s?

I will take a look at other companies, but I need to know this question first.

Alright folks, here's what happneed:

I went down to the audio shop, and asked the guy about Sennheisers and Sony. he said he hadn't gotten his first shipment of the PX model range and he doesn't carry the Sony stuff, so he couldn't comment on them. He said from what he has for under 100$CDN, the Sennheiser HD457s were the best I could get, and then the next up would have been a pair of Boses for 150+$. I took a listen on a HK stereo system and I was really impressed. A full sound through the whole range, pretty solid on the basses and treble was fairly impressive too. I'll have to tweak them around around a bit to find the best EQ.

He sold 'em to me for 68$CDN. The only downside is they aren't real lookers:

Again, thanks a bunch GTPlanet, y'all saved me a bunch of money and I ended up with a better set of headphones (the iPod surgery for its new battery was also fun; they're pretty tight in there).

Nice choice. Not the best (ie, Grado), but pretty good compared to the other stuff in the sub $100 range

The 700's are their ultra high end dj cans, right? Those are supposed to be pretty good for dj use
