Its really quite a feat to have stayed in the console game for such a long time, having a pedigree in electronics rather than just being a gaming company certainly helped them on the hardware side of things also being a major player in the home entertainment market (music, movies etc) has given them an advantage to.

In the PS2 era they pretty much went for years unchallenged in any real way and that allowed them to build up a good portfolio of in house studios and franchises which hopefully carry the PS3 through rougher more competitive times.

How Dated is this though (Didn't the PS3 Surpass the 360 ? )

It's not dated, its bang up to date (or at least the PS3 figure is).

PS3 sales have only surpassed 360 sales in Europe, thats probably where you heard it.

PS3 is catching up the 360 world wide and doing it pretty fast. They've increased their average annual sales and made a sizable dent in MS's lead. (3.6 million units away) But, with MS readying a new console and knowing what happened to the Xbox when the 360 was released, Sony might be able to make up that gap in a single year. (they're averaging 10 million units a year. Which, actually, puts them on a path to break 100 million units with the PS3 by then end of the PS3's 10 year lifespan....which...Sony's already the only company to average at least 50 million units per system. 100 million per system would be insane and put Sony WAY out of reach of their competition.)

Thats if it goes for the intended 10 years, the next one might arrive slightly sooner (6 years) seeing as MS and Nintendo are already pushing ahead with their next machines and after E3 the threat level will become more clear. Whenever the PS3 retires I don't think it will be ever be as successful as Sony hoped but they certainly turned things around from 2006.

It should also be pointed out that those numbers are without handhelds. With handhelds, Nintendo jumps ahead to over 500 million units and Sony sits in second with 365 million units. Not that those two numbers alone = 865 million systems. And the total game systems sold throughout history has surpassed the 1 billion units mark.

None of them can compare to Andrex toilet rolls.
Billions of them sold.

No, that news that active console. That means existing ones because of failure rate analyst believe there are more active PS3 than 360. However when it comes to number of sales. 360 is approx 3.5million ahead including 360 arcade model which are sold for 199$ and it got 1yr head start in US, Japan. 1.5yrs in rest of the world.
