This is terrible news for GT fans who are unable to use a wheel. Future iterations of GT will probably come with L/R triggers as the default brake/gas configuration.

One such feature that Sony has decided not to include in the DualShock 4 is analog face buttons. Analog face buttons were introduced with the DualShock 3/Sixaxis and registered not only that a gamer pressed a button but also how hard they pressed it.

No they weren't. The Dual Shock 2 had them, and they were notable enough at the time that the XBAWKS controller copied the idea directly. It's unfortunate for sure, since it was an altogether much more elegant solution than simply forcing button combinations to do the same thing; but long throw triggers (and developer insistence to simply port Xbox 360 control schemes) really did largely make analog face buttons superfluous.

Looks like the analog buttons could cause input-lag, so they killed that feature for more Bluetooth-Bandwidth.
I use the right analog-stick for throttle and brakes since GT2, so I don't really care.

This wasnt the most accurate source but several other sites are reporting the same thing (no more analogue face buttons in PS4)...

As it should.
Exactly the awkward default gas to brake pedal was always annoying although different.

L/R for b/a is terrible for so many reasons, maybe I am biased since GT1 was the first racing game that got me hooked so their default []/X layout stuck with me the longest but here goes...

1. Most people use their right foot for both gas and brake (unless they are in a kart) so right thumb handling both functions works and feels better while fingers would function the same as they would if you were in a car with paddle shift.

2. Right Stick for gas/brake is terrible because you cant use both functions at the same moment.

3. Try doing a heel toe with the L/R layout and then turning immediately after.

4. Driving in reverse and then doing a 180 turn and switching to drive while throwing your car into gear 1 after spinning out is just confusing with L/R...

5. Unlike your fingers, the thumbs have the ability to hit 2 buttons on face of the controller at the same time.

I wish I added a poll in this thread...

It's all opinion, when I used a controller, I used L2 and R2.

Like everyone I started on PS1 with X/[] but after moving first to Xbox 360 and then PS3 nothing but triggers make sense any more. So much better control with more travel in the triggers than a button. Have you tried it? I could never go back to using face buttons anymore.

Its an OK layout in TT otherwise its just wonky when rapid gear changes come into play...

What do you use? For me I have square and circle for down/up and it works great. first finger doing the throttle/brake, left thumb steering, right thumb shifting.

It is all personal preference though.

Default layout ([] brake, X gas, L/R shifting)...

What difference does the default option make for a game that allowed near-complete customization anyway?
GT was the first driving game I played on the regular so their default layout stuck with me (didnt know much about driving games at the time so I used the suggested layout)...

Most driving games used face buttons up until Xbox showed up and changed their standard to make their new hardware fit in.

No I meant if you use L/R trigger for throttle/brake as I thought you suggested you'd tried, what would you use for gear change?

And you didn't get on with that? It certainly took a while for me to adjust, when I first started with Forza 2 I'd race automatic but slowly I got the hang of it and I wouldn't go back to anything else now. Just keep playing with it, you'll never move on from the old ways unless you stick at it. ;)

It just felt like I was complicating things...

I think it's a good idea to move past the pressure sensitive setup. In the past I found myself with sore thumbs simply because I wanted to be sure I was going full throttle.
I've always played using one joystick and the four buttons on anything other than FPS games, this looks like the kind of change that is actually going to be appreciated by some of us in the long run. 👍

I personally don't mind the change, since I don't use the analog buttons for gas and brake, only handbrake (Which is basically ON or OFF). I used to use the triggers when I first played on automatic, then when I learned how to drift, I forced myself to learn manual and changed up my control scheme: X and Square for gas and brake, L1/R1 for shifting.

Now, I've changed my gear shifter to the right analog stick. That obviously would not work at all for drifting unless I stayed in one gear all the time. I changed back to L2/R2 for gas and brake once again. Now, it is a little tricky trying to change gears when I have my thumb on O for handbrake. I guess I should probably reassign L1 to downshift, just so I can bump down one or two gears when going hard into a turn with the handbrake applied.

I used the trigger button - L2 in this instance for left foot braking ( more precise control ), while X and square for gas and brake, there's no other way as I often left foot brake when driving, especially useful when driving cars with rapid gear changes ( cars with close ratio gearing ) and I mostly heel and toe ( blip the throttle on downshifting - very useful as I don't use brake assist ). Besides my DS2 face buttons are unbeatable compared to the badly built face buttons on DS3.

For PS4, without analogue face buttons :( I will have to use wheel then  or maybe somewhere along the way, there will be aftermarket PS4 controller with analogue face buttons.

So sore finger instead of sore thumb? Same difference to me :P...

Wheel/chassis takes up too much space in the hole in the wall that I plan on living in for another 2 years. If Sony/PD does not end up providing DS3 support to GT7 I will be pretty unhappy unless I end up moving...

I started playing GT since the GT1 demo.

I am [] and X user all the way.

From what I hear they made the front buttons digital due to the bandwidth limits of BT2.0 being reached.

Question why use BT2.0 when BT4.0 was available during manufacturer.
BT3.0 would have been more than enough to handle all buttons and analog data with 1000% more bandwidth.

I thought this wouldn't affect me, until I fired up GT5 just now and went drifting. I knew it was there but didn't realize I actually made use of this function. I thought it was only drag racing people used it in online lobbies for rolling starts. This would totally ruin drifting for me.

They are also removing the pressure sensitivity for the Directional-pad. which means no more steering from the d-pad, joysticks only now. No I can't steer with the triggers.

They say they remove this features to reduce latency, but erhm er... did anyone EVER complain about latency?
At least we can use the bandwidth for share button and touchpad that no-one ever wanted.

Just sounds like cost cutting to me.

If you're using the dpad to steer, you're doing it wrong. The analog stick is much better suited to steering, although it's a little odd using it for throttle/brake input.

I've been using the d-pad to steer for like 10 years, it's perfectly fine, its the joystick that is far too loose for precise steering around large radius corners.
And to let the joystick settle in the middle requires a contortion of the thumb to lift up which is extremely uncomfortable.

As late as GT3, I was using [] and X to brake and steer. After I learned to do it on the sticks, I never went back. The level of control is just so much better.

Well that's going to put me at a disadvantage then as I have a dislocated left thumb, I can't use L2 and R2 for brakes and gas without it hurting my the rest of my left hand to the extent that Im in pain and I have to stop playing. I have always been using X & [] as its easier for me to use due to that.

Try dual stick controls, seriously. I'm handicapped myself, although different than you and it works great.

You have no idea how I hold my controller.

I think there will be a few clone controllers that may end up having pressure sensitivity.

Companies are not stupid(well some are) and they know some gamers like the pressure sensitivity thing and will make a controller that uses it.
Hoping it works with the normal BT2.0 or it could use a WiFi stick like keyboards.
