If I pay for a console and i pay for a game I do not want adds.

Ya never know. Sony could own this patent as protection to stop this from happening.

I really hope that is the case. Or, as the article suggests, it could just be for the "free" users.

Lots of patents are registered every day, it doesn't mean the "products" will ever see the light of day. Heck, they may intend these ads for other SOE platforms, other than the main ones like PS3/PSP.

If most of these things happen I will never buy a PS4.

I would be willing to bet that Sony will not implement that into console gaming. If they did I would think it would be free to play games like Dust 514 and only in-between rounds, not during gameplay. If it works it's way into disc based game I will write a strongly worded letter to Sony. Actually, probably not but I will complain about it on a forum.;)

I highly doubt for console games. As has been said it's likely or free or starter editions of SOE games. DC Universe, Dust 514 and others might see this but I wouldn't see it happening in the middle of Uncharted or Little Big Planet.

If Sony introduce something like this then just buy an Xbox or a Wii and show how much you hate them. Can't afford to buy a new console? Go on ebay and buy a Dreamcast for €3 / £2.50 / $4 / ¥300! Or break out a PS1 and GT2... Or LSD: Dream Emulator!

I think this is pretty annoying but then again we don't pay for online so maybe it's got something to do with that?

Awesome. Just awesome. I doubt sony would do that when they're already trying to get more monies...but then again...

Ad-block anyone? ;)

Not going to work for an ad coded into the game.

LaBounti
Free smartphone games already do this......

This is crazy for console games...

They don't have it patented. I wonder if Sony will force them to stop or pay royalties...

I'm thinking Billboards at race tracks and sport Fields ala GT5 and Fifa which isn't a distraction at all.

The really scary thing here isn't the prospect of having ads appear as you play a game (even if that's very bad!) - it's the fact that something like this was granted a patent at all :banghead:

Previous PES games have done that (including ones from ESPN advertising an upcoming Premier League game) as well as adding various ads into the pause menu.

This patent is for including TV style advertising in games where the game actually stops to play an ad, then resumes which is the (potential) problem here.

It will probably be for the application market. Free versions of angry birds etc.

I truly doubt you will see this implemented into full games because it would destroy their sales.

It would be like,
Using a bluray and having commercials in the middle of the movie.
Thar would never work with movies and it would sure as heck not work with games.

Oh well that is just disgusting in that Case ,Wouldn't think Sony if they implement this will do it in an annoying way though .

Imagine Poliphony Digital doing this

24h Endurance race
pit stop
ads on Nissan GT-R
return race
game freeze
reset console.

Somebody was saying to me, it will more then likely be up to developer discretion. You can see it happening with developers releasing free games, or small independent parties putting cheap titles out. It's amazing that we already have this on our phones and nobody care's less, the fact it's only being patented and everybody is up in arms.
