A document publicly available via the internet - gawd bless it - has ignited speculation that a revised-hardware PS3 is in the pipeline.

It's revealed in the document that Sony has made an application requesting 'a class II permissive change' to the console to the US Federal Communications Commission. It's suggested by the changes detailed that a version of PS3 with an 80Gb hard drive will be released to live alongside existing models.

Alterations - i.e. update - to PS3's Bluetooth antennae are additionally related to in the document.

It's likely that any revisions to PS3 hardware would be minor and applied across the board, with a new 80Gb model simply being that - a PS3 with a bigger HDD. We'll just have to wait and see.

Sony declined to comment on the matter when contacted earlier.

I don't see the point, really. Maybe if Sony tried again to make an incredible set-top box like the PSX was, it would work this time, but why bother? The PS3 60GB is good enough as is.

IIRC, there was a PS3X thing at E3 last year... it was to feature a 250GB HDD, dual HDMI, etc etc. And it'd retail for $2,000.

It's not really intended for kids, the actual PS3 part is the same, it just has more features intended to make it a high end entertainment do-all, I hope they dont make too many upgrades that will make me regret buying one so soon after launch, the HDD I could care less about but I would hate to see sony pull a Microsoft so soon after launch

PS3 20GB = Dead now.

So now the media is calling this an "Elite" version despite adding nothing new to the hardware. Someone from Sony already said all ps3 owners get an elite experience compared to the other guy's system. Sony has mention HDD upgrades since before E306 i believe.

Nah, it still runs through walmarts retail channel, but most other retailers (Best BUy, Circut City, GameStop, EB Games, Target) have all stopped carrying the 20GB model.

Sony will discontinue it around holiday season or very early in 2008.
