Latest news coming out of Sony's managing director of computer entertainment Australia

Sony's Michael Ephraim said the Japanese giant would probably throw the existing policy out of the door because of the merging of international TV standards. "If you look at the fact that it will support high-definition TV, which will be a global standard, there's a good likelihood that it will be global region, as for example we've done with the PSP"

This makes me very happy if true, what is your thoughts on the matter?

It''l be great if it happens. Then we the consumer can choose where to buy our games.
I only have a US PS2 now and import all my games. A region free next-gen console will give people more choice of games. A good thing!
However, is it going to happen?

He's confused, region lockout has nothing to do with differences in standards and everytyhing to do wtih economy. It won't happen, mark my words.

I don't think it can happen. Games prices are adjusted for each market, so if there were no region coding, everybody will just go online and buy their games from China and the U.S., where they are cheaper. Retailers from most countries with high cost of living will end up losing serious amount of money. As much as I'd love to play the Japanese version of Dragon Quest games on my unmodded PS3, I don't think it's going to happen. I'd love to be wrong on this though, and I'm sure tha_con feels the same. :D

Obviously.

rumor*I heard a rumor that PS3 will have super long loading times but between loading you can play Final Fantacy X2*rumor

On topic Sony,Microsoft, Nintendo and the game develpoers & publishers do not see a dime on used games. Here is a nice piece on used games.

90% of my Xbox games are used and about 25% used for ps2

Its a very good idea to do this, also MS will have to compete with this or the consumer will move to the more open console due to the amount of varied software on offer. lets hope they do it.

Good question, but the redion coding is on the disks so I doubt it, they could, butI doubt they'd bother doing multi-region emulation.

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

Sounds like a good idea to me since now people in the US can by games overseas that didn't come here in the first place. :O 👍 Ebay or Amazon, I am willing to pay for imported games that didn't make it to the US! :yup:

sidewayz wy don't you do what i did and by a slide card of ebay or whatever you use and then use that. Its simple:)

Of course they don't see a dime on used games, but it will hurt them even more if they would actually implement them this, than it would when people sometimes buy used games. People wouldn't buy the console or any of the games anymore at all.

It's the same with movies, if I would only be able to play a dvd on my own dvd player I would stop buying movies all together. Usually when I watch my bought dvd's I'm not even at home. What about those party games? You can't take your game over to someone else's house to have fun with a group of friends anymore.

What would be the point of even buying it?

Now ok, if they would make new games $20 I might support this, because then you are able to buy more games to just play at home, but I don't see that happening.

Games are real expensive due partly to piracy.

I wouldn't care about my bought games (I always buy new), but not being able to rent things really sucks.

Not true, games are expensive because the retailers want a nice chunk of the profit, the games have come down in price since the first PS1 games and piracy was not big deal at that time compared to today. The developers don't see much of the 30 pounds you spend on a new game.

I remember some developers (company as a whole) saying they recieve $7-9 (US $ and prices) of each game.

Really, thats more than I've heared, even so, it's not a majority profit. The stockists take the most and games are expensive becasue the stockists overcharge the shops and the shops have to make a profit too. Mind you the figure I've heared may have factored in the costs of manufacturing, packaging and shipping and deducted it from the figure, I'm at work so I can't check it.

Are PSP games region locked?

No. The PSP is region free for games, but not for movies. If you buy a Japanese UMD movie it will not play on a US PSP, but the opposite for games. 👍

Sony may or may not ditch region coding for the PS3 (probably not) but is it going to use the same vibration technology in its controller!
Have'nt they had their appeal yet?

Why? Did they win their case/buy the rights?
