Flexible OLED display prototype demonstrated

The field of thin, rollable displays just got a little more crowded with the demonstration of a flexible OLED display by Universal Display Corp. According to the company, its 4-inch prototype display is based on flexible metal foil and is just 0.1mm thick; a comparable glass display would be at least 1 mm. The display is capable of displaying full motion video at a resolution of 100 dpi. Universal Display's research has been funded in part by the US Department of Defense, and prototype displays have been provided to military research labs.

Pretty cool! I can't wait to see how they use it with larger screens in the future.

Thats really cool. How did hell did they got the screen to flex?

"Based on flexible metal foil 0.1mm thick."

I can't wait until I get my little retirement home with OLED wallpaper.

I watched a documentary about this technology a while ago. They explained how it coule be used with mobile phones to create a portable good size screen. Amazing technology.

Wow, It's time to make magazines and newspapers with this technology. Imagine, moving videos and images on magazines and newspapers!

This would be pretty cool, coat your wall with it, theres your TV right there. :sly:

Hmm I just noticed it was also funded by the us department of defense, imagine the possibilites! How sweet would it be to have military vehicles covered with this as camoflouge! Hehe, cover military airplanes with this and play a video of the sky and you'd be close to making aircraft invisible!

That would be cool, but the subscription might cost more than PS3. :p

The video said the Sony will have one on sale before the year's over(good thing it's not PD promising that).

Is it just me, or does that thing look really energy efficient? It would be perfect for cell phones.

It could also mean you will get attacked and die before anyone even knew someone was there. It's only cool if no one else has it.

This was in Popular Science. If anyone wants to know what they had to say about it, I'll dig it up. Thanks for sharing.

There was also an interesting article... well, a lot of them, actually, about a laser mouse where you just point to move the mouse and jab your finger to click, and radiation terrorism/assasinations.

Remember Back to the Future II, and the breakfast cereal box? It had live animations on it. That's going to be possible one day, and soon.

What's also cool about this technology, you can make near full size keyboards for cell phones, too. Just scroll it out, lay it on top a book and type away. 👍

"Hang on Mate. I'll just roll up my papers and my laptop and we can go"...

That is very very cool !...

What I want to do with it that's very, very cool is roll this out on the front of a Hot Rod and playback a video of real flames. The ultimate flame job!

With the current push towards electrical efficiency in the house hold (especially here in the UK) and the gradual increase in screen size this technology would be ideal for replacing the highly inefficient plasma screens we use currently.

Oh, the one in Popular Science was by another company, currently in black and white but color is possible, and on a plastic screen for a cell phone.

Now thats what I call mega cool. imagine your mouse but displaying the buttons for what weapon your using in a game or even the aplication like photoshop. Even better a cheap version of it could be used for clothes, like a logo changing or on shoes. This will then pave the way for really strange places to have images and video like the toliet seat :D

Shoes with this were also in PopSci last month... upload an image to the screen from your cell phone and it displays it.

Hell, why not turn every window in your house into a tv while you're at it!

I'm in shock! I love technology man... I wonder how much it actually flexes before becoming damaged though?

It'd be hilarious if you could fold it up like a paper note and pass it in class.. :P

That's so damn cool. I immediately had flashbacks of BttF II.

That's for regular OLED displays, not flexible ones.

Thing is, Samsung had flexible LCDs a couple years ago.

I did see some thing in PC Magazine about rollable displays being used in a mobile communication device in Europe... I'll see what I can find when I get home.

Sony is not giving breaking new tech here, at least to me. What is impressive though is how thick it is. But OLED's have their own problems, like viewing them in direct sunlight... nigh impossible.

I think this is what I was looking at... not sure though.

Yeah, that flexible one I think is just a test model. Sorry for the confusion. What they actually said was: Sony had announced that they will release a Organic EL TV before the year's over.

Imagine the possibilities when the technology allows for production of massive flexible screens. Not only would movie theaters, for example, have surround sound, but also surround imagery - the action on your right, sight & sound, would actually be viewed and heard to your right. The application of this new technology for Virtual Reality (VR) gaming would certainly make wearing a helmet a better solution than a flat screen monitor or TV. Awesome!
