Ok, Yes i have searched for this, but I have a few questions for myself and others having problems with the SPCH-30001 PS2's. In the event of persistant disk read errors SONY will replace the laser for free assuming the tamper proof seal hasent been, well, tampered with. My questions are:

1. Is their a specific number to call for this problem and if so what is it?

[EDIT]
A. the regular sony hotline will do just fine for this matter, and that number is: 1-800-345-SONY.

2. When they replace the laser, which is known to be of poor quality, hence the decaying of it's performance. Do they replace it with origonal equipment, or one of the higher quality lasers in the newer models?

In other words, will this free fix wear out in a short time just like the origional
or will it last like the new PS2's?

[EDIT]
A. The replacement laser is a remanufactured unit, so yes your getting the same shoddy laser but hey it's free.

I cant give you the number or the source to get in contact with, but I can tell you what I know. I replaced my laser a few years back, and i'm pretty sure they simply replaced it with one of the same quality. Just recently it died on me, about the same time it took the first one to die. Instead of sending it back, I took matters into my own hands. It's extremely easy to fix the d.r.e; http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars . That's the guide I followed. You don't really need a guide, just simply unscrew your ps2, unscrew the cover of the laser but watch when you remove it. It's connected to the base by an ide styled cord. After that was off I carefully rubbed the laser head with a qtip. Since then my ps2 has been like new.

ps: I have no clue on model numbers :dunce:

Yes. it's not just the 30001's, they will fix any model that is having DRE's thats just my model.

Oie, I've been shunted back to GT2. My problem seems to be with DVD's. It plays PS1 and PS2 CD-rom's fine but the PS2 DVD-rom's like GT3 and GT4 DRE every time. Belive me I tried, ALOT.

Call 1-800-345-SONY. They'll get you settled.

Be prepared to wait at least three weeks for your PS2 to return. They closed down the other PS2 repair center and the only one left will also be used to repair PSPs. It's the San Diego repair center. It usually goes like this:

  • You ship your PS2 or PSP to the San Diego Repair Center called SSC.

  • They then ship it to the Sony manufacturing plant located in Mexico and remove the outer cover, it it's a PS2. The inside components are sent to a repair station where about a dozen workers are located.

  • Your PS2 frame is sent to a different work station where a worker then cleans it and installs a used component system that has already been repaired, cleaned, oil and tested. He tests your PS2 to make sure everything works and sends it back to San Diego.

  • San Diego does the paper work and sends the bill to PSX Project in Foster City while your PS2 is shipped back to you at no charge.

All the internal components they use are from other PS2 sent in that had DREs. The components are cleaned, repaired, oiled, inspected and tested to work like new. So, if you have a malfunctioning laser, it wll be replaced along with new internal components when you send in your PS2 for DREs.
