So I went and watched a friends band today, and came home having recorded it and had a whale of a time, Queen, ZZ Top, and more covered... but then when I start it up, the sounds not working. Or rather it's screeching a lot. I notice on the recordings its fine when people are talking, but when music kicks in this white noise comes in :(

What recording device did you use?

It sounds like a sensitivity issue.

My phone. I've had the issue before. I noticed how it's when drums and bass kick in it won't work well, like it doesn't like the frequency?
 
It's a SPL / sensitivity issue with the microphone.

Phones use microphones of relatively low quality and with a sensitivity range meant primarily for speech.
When you feed them high SPL's they tend to distort the signal.
If the SPL is constantly over the dynamic range limit, the whole signal gets "washed out".

My phone is a Sony Xperia SP http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-sp/ - i've never had issues with previous phones at similar events. Is there no chance then of "removing" the noise from the audio track maybe? Or altering my phone settings for future use?
 
A quick round on Google tells me this is a common grievance with Xperia Z/SP users.
The user manual doesn't mention anything about adjustments either.

I can't think of a solution other than an external microphone.

No worries, least I know now - my previous Xperia's have never had this issue :irked:
