So, I am one of seemingly few who actually uses split-screen in GT5. It gets boring when it's just you vs. your friend on one big track, is there any info on A.I. cars being available during split-screen races? I haven't heard anything on it, and I'm not sure if I've overlooked it.

In fact... Will there be tire smoke and weather effects available in split-screen...? They weren't in GT5...

I also use split screen, and the way it is mentioned on the GT website, hints at AI. Although it isn't confirmed and is probably old boring VS...

"Here you can enjoy single races against computer controlled enemy cars, or take on a single player time trial or drift trial. You can also have 2 players racing simultaneously in a split screen format."

I'm not an engineer by any means, so I may be getting this wrong, so anyone feel free to correct me if I am. I think two inputs would be too much data to add on top of AI. AI can run alongside one player because that is just one variable, the rest of the cars are if-then-else and there's not a lot to them. But two variables (two players) would be too much to calculate and make the AI adjust accordingly that the PS3 couldn't handle it. I'm sure the PS4 would be more than capable of running two players plus AI.

And I think the reason we can have so many players online racing each other is maybe because the data is distributed amongst the PS3s, and also there aren't any other calculations running, ie AI. That would explain the lack of AI online.

I use split screen too, but I am almost certain we wont see AI while playing split screen. I simply don't think the hardware can do it. GT on the PS4 though...my fingers are crossed!

Split screen would be ideal for something like a head-to-head Race of Champions style event - hopefully, something like this will exist in GT6, but I highly doubt it since I there hasn't been any direct reference to it.

F1 2013 on PS3 can have AI controlled cars running during multiplayer, even during online races with multiple people. You can have a total of 22 cars on the grid in an online race, 16 players and 6 AI cars to round out the full grid. Sadly, GT probably pushes the PS3 too hard to be able to add this feature. If it couldn't do something as simple as standing starts in GT5 with AI cars.....well, yeah.

It would be great, as would the ability to race online in split screen, but I really don't expect it to happen. It seems to me that split screen is catered to less and less in games these days...

Im sure Codemasters unoptimized mess called F1 2013 is also pushing the PS3^^

I know I sound defeatist, but I guess arcade mode will turn out to be the same as GT5, so no Splitscreen with AI :( I would be fine with using 720P or 30fps for splitscreen.

I'd hope there will be AI, but I honestly won't be surprised if there isn't. It would make the larger tracks feel less empty if AI was racing with you and whoever you are racing with.

Not likely, there's not nearly enough there to be pushing the PS3 even close to its limits. It's AI is miles better than any GT game though, it's actually better than most real-life GT players I've encountered online public rooms.

Sorry for my bad wording, I meant that it could be possible that PD, who are tech wizards and masters of the PS3, managed to make GT6 cause less strain on the PS3s hardware than Codemasters, who are can't even run their F1 games at 720p/60fps.

You are definetly right about the AI, miles ahead of my retired B spec bobs.

I was asking if this was a known feature or not, not if I wanted it.

Obviously I do...

Addressing the power issue on the PS3, I would like to know how another player-controlled asset compares to a computer-controller asset... I mean, the AI calculates based on other AI cars too... So I'd imagine it's up to rendering of multiple parts if the map. Like on the Nurburgring - the track details don't need to be rendered for them necessarily, just the physical part of the map that they're using. A physical player needs to have all of the details rendered, therefore requiring nearly twice the power - though, the screen is smaller, therefore a smaller render out put. And I can't imagine AI calculations would be twice as big/complex. This would explain why we couldn't do weather cycles or see tire smoke in GT5 2P - the particles needed to be rendered twice. Online has multiple systems running the data, and just like with AI, the map only needs to render where the in-game "camera" (player) is.

I don't know how much code compression has been done in GT6. The engine is a lot more efficient now, but there's more complex physics variables too... So it's hard to say what PD will be able to do. Adaptive tessellation could ease things, too, as cars could run with lower polygons if there's a lot of particle build up to conserve render power. I'd image if they could do 2P smoke/other particle effects, they could do at least 2-4 AI cars. I'd prefer a full 16-car grid, but oh well.

^ My impression is that rendering the cars and maps already require so much power that there are only breadcrumbs left for any other features. Even if having AI cars during multiplayer only required 5% more processing power, that power probably isn't available.
