This friendly little guy walked right up to me and took acorns right from my fingers. :yum: At one point he placed his paw on my finger while he ate.

'maro didn;t post the pic of him shooting it with a BB Gun and then putting it on a rottisere over an open fire.....mmmm redneck delight ! ( j/k ) shot it and fed it to the neighbours dog

There used to be a chipmunk at my cottage that would sit around near the back door cause we always left peanuts for him. squirrels and stuff up north arent scared of people like they are in the city so you can almost always get them to come up to you. I dont think they live that long though cause I havent seen a specific one is a long time.

You're crazy man. Those disgusting things can be quite vicious. I'm surprised the little rat-thing didn't bite one of your fingers off. Those things can carry life-threatening diseases, you know that? You're asking for trouble, dude.

Yes, or he may beat you to death with his furry tail :nervous:

do you have a name for him?

All of the above actually applies to parrots too.

Well, then screw parrots, too!

I had a former employee that had a couple and you could smell the flea-filled buggers the moment you stepped in his house. :yuck:

I take it Solid Lifters isn't much of an animal person? ;)

We quite like feeding the animals, though the only animals we hand-feed are the bunnies and raccoons (I'd gladly feed the foxes, but they're a bit too skitterish… they'll take food from a bowl though).

Here's one of our foxes. It's hard to tell from this picture, but he was mauled by something (probably a bobcat or mountain lion) just a few hours before this was taken. He's recovered nicely since then (a few months ago), although when he was mauled part of his right ear was bitten off, so he looks a bit awkward. Actually, you can see that in the picture (looks like the left side from this angle).

And here's one of our raccoons with one of her babies (she has three of them), eating hot dogs. All the raccoons are very good about taking food from our hands – they use their paws to take it, and very gently.

It's not that I don't care for animals, hell I love them, but some just are worth the problems and odors they cause. We have raccoons, possums, coyotes, mice, rockchucks, foxes, roadrunners, quail, doves, owls, hawks, snakes, bobcats, mountain lions, bear, sheep and dear around were I live. The smaller ones cause havoc for our puppy, so I don't like them around. The coyotes and the mountain lions really concern me. I don' like them around my home because the threat of attack against my boys and puppy. If I see one, I kill it. I do that only to keep my family safe. I don't want them around my home. However cruel that might sound, I do love them. I do enjoy having them around, but not around my home. I know living in the hills I should expect this kind of wildlife around, but I want them to stay away from me, and the only thing to do once they get into the habit of getting close to you is kill it.

I can't understand why people feed wild animals around their home. It's something that shouldn't be done, Sage. They are wild animals, and they might seem like friendly pets when you feed them, but they can and will turn on you. Once you start feeding them, they're your responsibility forever. They'll keep coming by for food, and if they don't get any, heaven help you. They can be nasty little turds when they want to be. Ripping up garbage bins, stealing pet food, finding ways into you home to steal food since you didn't leave any out for them. They wont hesitate to attack kids or pets either.

Plus feeding little animals attrack bigger animals that feed on them. We had a problem with coyotes coming around are old home when we decided to feed a little possum friend that used to eat our peaches off our peach tree. They wanted to eat that little friend of ours, he used to seek refuge near our home, since he knew it was a safe place for him. Bad idea if you have little kids. Coyotes will attack little kids.

I see it more from a safety issue, and not so much as hating them, or wishing them any ill will. Hey, if they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone.

I understand that as being a problem where you are, but my neighborhood has exactly three houses in it, and I'm the youngest (in fact, the only kid), and nobody has puppies or anything, so that's not a problem for us.

Yeah, we're very aware of that issue, but you wouldn't believe how docile the animals are here – the foxes obviously won't do anything, because they're way too chicken to cause any havoc whatsoever. The raccoons are obviously more of a cause for concern, but ours are very well-behaved. Whenever we're gone for several days, my mom just puts out more dog food than normal, and that really does appease them… we've never had one go through our trash cans, even though there's a row of 6 trash cans right next to their feeding spot. You have to remember that I am surrounded on all sides by Angeles National Forest land, so by no means do they use our house as their primary means of feeding themselves, but more for a quick meal – they'll come to our door, sit for a while, and if we don't come out, they'll just casually walk away to find some "real" food.

Also, a rather interesting story: About a year ago, we all went out to dinner one night. My dad forgot to lock the door to his project room though. When we came back, we saw a raccoon run out of that door. Upon further investigation, we found that several raccoons had gone through that door, walked out of the project room and into the living room, walked down the hall and into the kitchen, found a bag of grapes that we had laying on the ground (which we were going to feed to them anyway, since we know they love grapes), ate the grapes, then walked back through the kitchen, living room, and out the door, all the while not touching a single thing except for the grapes. They could have easily torn the place apart, and had easy access to a lot of food in the kitchen, but they were nice enough to just eat the grapes and not touch anything.

Again, we don't have little kids (my mom's about the littlest person here, I guess), so not really an issue. We had one coyote that tried to eat the baby raccoons, but he fled as soon as we opened the door (and my dad managed to shoot it near the foot, and it hasn't returned since).

It's wierd to see a brown squirrel. In Toronto they're all black. And gray in Montreal....

Why? I don't know.

Famine?

My cousin and I used to do that, at his house, all we did was hold peanuts in the air and they will come and take it right out of your hand and stand there waiting for more. :)

What color are the trees that they hide in? Or, do they hide in rocks, or the earth? ;)

About 2 weeks ago i was working on my truck and had lug nuts on the ground. I couldnt believe he walked up by me and picked one of those up and put it by his mouth. I ran after him to scare him away. I didnt want him dropping one of those steel lug nuts on my vehicles. So I was out there today and he just walked up by me again so I thought that mabey I could actually feed him. My girlfriend and her brother were there and they just couldnt believe that it grabbed the acorns from my fingers. The first one I just threw by him and he took it and ate it. After that he came right to me. I gave him 6 or 7 and he burried all of them in the yard in miscelaneous places and ate 1 of them.
1 of the times he grabbed my finger and scared me so I jerked away. lol
I was surprised how black his eyes were. Kinda creepy.
We have some black squirrels but not very many.
No name for him yet. My girlfriend did suggest that but I just laughed at her.

Since Hantavirus, bubonic plague, and rabies are comon diseases spread by squirrels, you can him "Hanta" or "Bubo". Maybe "Hydra" or "Phoby" for short.

i've been licked by an aneater in belize once....i have pics of him too. ....a cute thing he was. he came right up to me. lol.

I finally see the great Sage!

On a on-topic note, I was once walking out of OSH and a pigeon was in my way and I kept on walking thinking it was going to move out of the way. I was towering over it and it looked at me and didn't move. So I had to move out of the way for it.:odd: It was all really odd and confusing.
