Game Title: SSX3
Type: Snowboard Sim
Format: PS2 and XBOX
Format I Played On: PS2
Website: www.ssx3.co.uk
The 3rd installmant of the highly successful SSX series and this time, its you against the mountain!
Following on from the Uber-Trick filled SSX Tricky, it was always going to be hard to better what has to be the greatest snowboarding sim around, the changes in SSX3 include:
Free roaming inviroment
Revised character customiations
3 new characters
More Uber-Tricks
EA BIG Challenges
The first change on that list is the biggest one and totally changes the way you play the game, in SSX Tricky you picked either showoff or race and then a level and a boarder, in SSX3 you pick the boarder you wish to be and then thats it, your dropped off at peak 1 to begin with and you can go off to find your races or showoffs or a mix of both, and you can earn money which goes toward upgrades in either stats boards or the clothes you are wearing if you feel like you need to look fly.
As you earn more and more money and medals you eventually upgrade to peak 2 and then the uber-difficult peak 3 where you have to race through avalanches and glaciers falling above your head, not very nice to imagine, but very nice indeed to race through. Another improvment is the grphics, the already awesome graphics of SSX Tricky have been upgraded even further and now the white powder no longer looks liek white carpet, the trees are more detailed and the sky is breathtaking, truly beutiful. The tricks are more smooth with transistions between multiple tricks looking like they are just one continuous flow of moves.
Multiplayer is as much fun as SSX Tricky with the ever so popular knockdowns back to dish out bragging rights to a new level, the graphics are just the same as they are in single player aswell which is a welcome addition.
So SSX Tricky was the complete snowboarding game, and still is highly respectable, but SSX3 gives you that sense of freedom that you only find up in the alps with just you and your board, its a great game which I truly enjoy playing, with or without friends. A must buy.
Graphics: 9 - The only defult I could find was the glaceiers did seem a bit rushed and unrealistic, otherwise its a beutiful game.
Gameplay: 8 - At first, to a novice it is hard to get the hang of doing tricks but once you do get the hang of, you will be linking combos like there is no tomorrow.
Sound: 8 - As you cruise round the mountain you get either the pleasure or the hatred of a DJ telling you the latest going ons in the game, do we really need to know? The soundtrack is half decent but where it really picks up is whe nyou just turn off the music and let nature take its course.
Multiplayer: 10 - Its one of the best to have a game with when round a pals house, you will be playing for ages trying to either knockdown the living daylights out of eachother or trying to get the largest combo, score etc.
Total: 35/40
