Some of you may remember an old feature from a few years ago, which automatically refreshed the "New Posts" search results. It was useful because you could leave your browser open on that page, and every thread that was marked 'New' since your last visit stayed that way until you got a chance to read it. For example, I wasn't able to view the site for a few days, and when I returned, all of the new posts were marked for me. However, I (of course) got a phone call not long after I logged on, and my 30 minute session expired. The software, consequently, lost track of all those new threads.

It's not the first time it's happened to me, but it will be the last. Now, when you view the "New Posts" page (available via link in the top right yellow box), it will automatically refresh every 20 minutes. This will keep you logged in to GTPlanet as long as the page is open, and will keep threads that you haven't read marked as 'new'. Just wanted to make the rest of you aware of this feature.

As I check from work this happens to me on occasion when work creeps up on me before I get through all the new posts.

It was easy to figure out by just seeing the last post date, but it was an annoyance. I'm glad to see it is fixed.

One thing I get on occasion is that if my browser crashes or I close it for some reason but come back into it five minutes later everything I recently read is marked as new again. Is that related or some cache/cookie thing that IE7 does? The is extremely rare, as I don't often close the browser and return in less than five minutes, so it isn't really a problem. Just a curiosity.

Yeah, that's just the way the cookie crumbles... :dopey: Information about your current visit is stored in a temporary 'session' cookie, which is deleted whenever your browser is closed. Because your session identification number is lost forever, it's impossible for the server to know what you have recently read and what you have not. So, it simply displays everything new since your last visit, as if you were visiting for the first time.

Yet another reminder on why I think so highly of this *site. 👍

This is great news, as this happens to me ALL the time. What I ended up having to do is to make a mental note to the time when I last visited the site, and then back track through threads to see what posts I may have missed.

* Although I must admit, when I may occasionally share with someone the fact that this is now pretty much the only site I ever post on any more, having been a long time contributor on several highly respected early hardcore AV and film related sites, they all think I lost my mind...

"It's a forum on a bloody car game!" they say…
"Why on earth would you spend time there?" they continue to wonder…

Needless to say I just smile and remind them on how uncivilized many of the once great forums have gotten, and that GTP is far more than just a forum for fans of sim driving games... although I like that as well. :)

So, Jordan, you're saying the session doesn't time out any more? Is that correct?
 I just read my original post, and clearly see the reason for the confusion. That's what I get for posting in a hurry! :dunce: I've revised the first post in the thread, but to answer your question, no the session does still time out. However, if you leave the browser window open to the "New Posts" page, it will refresh every 20 minutes, keeping your session active.
