Steering goes light on turn-in. Normal?

When I turn in, especially in higher speed corners, the steering wheel goes 'light' and 'into the turn', almost as if the game is trying to help me turn.

G29 on standard PS4. Tried at Beginner and Expert, same result.

I'd be glad to hear suggestions on whether this is normal, and if not, which settings might address it.

Thanks

You could try raising the dynamic dampening to 100 (I have mine on 50 but have a T300) and see how that feels.

According to ACC wiki the dampening is meant to help kinda stiffen the wheel up at high speed. The faster you go the harder the wheel is to turn. Mine defaulted at 0 but prefer 50 now.

I have experienced this exact thing. What do you have your gain setting at? It seems that even though the FFB is quite weak on the G29, if you go above about 80 Gain then the wheel starts clipping.

There is a bar just below the throttle and brake inputs on screen (Labelled FF) that shows when your FFB is kicking in. If it goes red your wheel’s clipping. I think I have mine set to 75 at the mo. Aris suggested in his PC wheel settings video to put the gain at or near 100, so I can only assume this is a bug, seeing as we’re supposed to have the same game as PC physics wise. Will be doing more experimenting with the settings today.

Thanks for the notes. Yes, I have gain at 100. I am actually using Aris' recommendations (Gain 100, Min force 12, damper 50 - he says 30 to 50 for G29, and road effects 20).

It may be that what I am feeling is FFB clipping, looking at this description (from a link from the wiki I mentioned above):
"Clipping is lack of detail because of your motor maxing out. A simple example would be: Your wheel is using all its power in a curve. The curve then goes even tighter but it feels exactly the same because your motor is already maxed out."

I'll give a lower Gain a try today and see what happens.
Thanks

Apologies for the typos.

Yes give it a go. I was changing everything but the Gain, as it was still relatively weak at 100, but lowering it doesn’t appear to have made much difference to the strength, just stopped it from clipping so much. So obviously have more detail and feel now in the wheel. Have much better feel now but still not 100% happy.

Don't forget as this is basically a true sim, the cars are different from make to make.

So if you keep changing cars then you may gave to play around with the settings all the time.

That is why ths advice is to choose a car that fits around your driving style and one you like and then stick with it. Practice practice and practice with the same car and learn its handling and then start to adjust its setup.

Agreed! Been hearing that a lot and is definitely the case. I’m leaning towards Lambo (I like my cars more lively). But the point about clipping still stands. If your wheel’s clipping then you won’t be able to notice these differences at all. Plus there’s the steering ratio issue too to add another spanner in the works.

Ultimately we need bugs sorted so we can keep our wheel settings the same across the board before we can truly feel the differences between each car.

I set my minimum force to 1. Not much of a raise but it eliminates the small deadzone in the middle of my T300 and makes the initial steering input more immediate. Anything higher than that I personally didn't like as it made the wheel vibrate strangely for no reason.

Good to know. I have a big standard wheel at the minute as I only started getting into sim racing since the lockdown. Looking to upgrade to a t150 pro or the g29.

I wanted to drive the ferrari but it didnt really suit my style....tested the lambo and didnt like it (too twitch lol)

Just doing practice Laps at present and small races to see what car I suit. At the minute it is looking like the Audi

Yes need to try them all first. Having too much fun with Lambo at the mo though!

I’ve just fired the game up and having a blast today. My current settings are below (G29). I just have a saved preset for each cars steering ratio using the attached image as reference -

Gain - 75
Minimum force - 2 (play around with this as much as you like. More relevant for G29 as there is a slight deadzone and this can help alleviate that a little)
Dynamic damping - 150 (this seems high compared to lots of others but it suits me at the mo)
Road effects - 20 (don’t go higher than this. Can cause a loss of feel)
Steering lock - dependant on car

As I said these seem good for me, won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I think this whole steering ratio business as in image below is making a lot of difference for now.

My current sweet spot on the Lamborghini, after a bunch of practice laps at Brands Hatch and Spa, and a race at Spa:
Gain = 70%
Min. Force = 2%
D. Damping = 105%
Road = 20%
Steer Lock 620° (per advice elsewhere no car specific locks)
s. Lin = 1.00
b. gamma = 1.00

Loving this game by the way.

Ok so can confirm now 100% that the feeling we’re getting of the steering going light on turn in to some corners is the wheel clipping. It mostly coincides with what sounds like the car bottoming out, which kinda makes sense as it mostly happens mostly in fast corners.

I’m guessing the culprit is either the Gain or Road effects, so now about to play around with them until the clipping has gone (if it does at all).

If it helps, I've not touched road effects after setting it at 20%, and I have lost that light feeling mid-corner. So it must be gain, damping, or less likely, min. force.

You’re right, it’s not road effects. Just posted this in the G29 settings thread. Hope it helps everyone.

If your steering’s going light it’s because of clipping. And the culprit is the Gain setting. So even though these wheels don’t have the strongest FFB, do not set it at 100. I’m at 60 at the mo and still get the odd clipping in fast corners where the car bottoms out, but it’s much better and haven’t lost a great deal of wheel resistance tbh (you’ll be able to see if your wheel is clipping by looking at the bar labelled FF underneath your throttle and brake bar, bottom right. When it goes red, wheel is clipping).

I’m sure you could eradicate it completely by lowering even further.

Hopefully it’s a bug as Aris himself has suggested putting Gain at or near to 100 for PC users.

These feel like my final settings now if anyone would like to use them -

Gain - 60
Min force - 2
Damping - 100
Road - 20
Steering lock set to specific cars.
