Steering Wheel or standard controller?

Been a GT fan for a long while but have always used the standard controller. I know a lot of people use forcefeed back wheels to great effect. I am considering buying one but have a couple of key questions.

What is the best reasonably priced wheel to buy and from where (Ebuyer list Logitech Driving Force Pro Wheel for £67.68 inc VAT but have no stock)

Can you use a wheel setup without first attaching the wheel to a solid desk or cockpit setup? (I bought a Seitek R4 for the PC years ago and this needed firmly attaching to a desk, its now not used as works with win98 drivers and I don't have space).

I don't have space for a cockpit setup as I race in the lounge and can't modify the furniture (if your married you won't have to ask why!!!).

So do I stick with the standard controller, buy a 'lap mounted setup' or move a TV out into the garage and build a cockpit?

Read through some of the steering wheel threads, particularly on the Driving Force Pro.

You will not get the most out of the wheel unless it is sturdily mounted. The lap holder does not work for most people. I could not use the wheel at all until I got a sturdy stand to mount it on, but building a whole cockpit is not strictly necessary.

Read through the Cheap Cockpit Alternatives thread and you'll get some wife-friendly ideas.
