Hello. Im really loving GT5 and I've come to realize that I need to buy a steering wheel. Im not sure where to start so if you guys could give me some recomendations that would be great. Here are the main features or specs that I am looking for.

- Gran Turismo 5 and PS3 compatable
- Realistic Feeling
- Great for racing
- Comes with a wheel and a stick as well as the gas, break, and clutch petals
- Paddle Shifters optional
- No stand needed
- Price no greater than $500

Thank you.

A good buy for the money is a Driving Force GT Wheel. That's what I have and I like it a lot. The Logitech G27 is a much better wheel but it's a lot more expensive and if your budget is up to 500 bucks then I'd look at that wheel if I was you.

Thankyou guys for the recomendations! Ill be sure to check out the G27. Seem's like a lot of people use it!

The G27 is great. Plus, the warranty Logitech offers is top-shelf.

For a stand, I have tinkered with assorted options. With limited room in my "man cave", I am not able to build a full rig. I found this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-26-Personal-Folding-Table-Set-of-4/13269099 at Walmart and it has by far worked the very best for my needs. I put some bungee cords on the bottom in select places for more support. A 1 x 4 (I cut one at 18") is needed as a spacer to secure the wheel to the table itself.

That page shows that it is a set of four sold for that 59 bucks... My local Walmart sells them as singles for 14 bucks and some change.

You will need a stand for any wheel you purchase, so add that into your $500
price concern. As alot of people have said the G27 is a great wheel, although I use paddle shifters on my DGFT so I have no need for a clutch.

As stated you must have some way to mount the wheel that is stable.

Making your own is a good option if you have the time and talent or you can buy a stand that is somewhat portable and very stable as well.

Logitech G27 meets all the criteria you listed, I have one and love it. Although I'd recommend a stand or something to mount it to at least, otherwise you're just wasting your money in my opinion.

Well I don't have much experience with wheels ... but I'm very happy with my G27 so far! If you are upgrading from DS3 to G27 ... it is a whole new game. And I mean you will be willing to try again some things that you (maybe) already did - like license test, etc. :)

I went with the G27 simply because of the price-to-quality ratio and the amount of aftermarket upgrade mods available for it.

It has totally changed the GT5 experience for me, the best peripheral I have bought to this day.

Has anyone here upgraded from DFGT to the G27? If so, other than quality, is there a difference in your performance on the track. Do the Simulation/Amateur/Pro settings work with the G27 from the options menu? If so, what's the difference between them?

I've played GT5 with the DFGT ,G27 and GT2 and my performance is close to the same. I used load cell with G27 and Gt2 but it only makes a difference with ABS off.
FFB is software driven so it's the same on all wheels, The difference of ffb between wheel is how smooth the ffb is and it's strength. Gt2 ffb is belt driven, G27 helical gears and DFGT has standard gears.
My preferred wheel is still G27 with Gt2 a close second. Still even though DFGT pedals are not that great I don't feel I'm at a disadvantage when playing Gt5. When I playing NTG 2011 I preform better with the G27 than DFGT because of smoother FFB and load cell brakes.(AP Electrix Load Cell Mod for G27)

The DFGT doesn't have a clutch pedal as it's a sequential transmission wheel, but it still has a nice somewhat realistic feel to it.

Maybe he already has a rig built and prepared for his wheel, and all he's looking for is a wheel to put on it?

Check out the Logitech G27 or Fanatec. Both have clutch pedals.

Yes, but Fanatec doesn't have official support with GT5 so you may have problems configuring the buttons to how you want it to work.

I have, I find I'm much faster with the G27 and the pedals are a whole lot better, I still have my DFGT, its a great wheel, but the G27 is so much better. Oh and simulation/amateur/pro doesn't apply to any of the Logitech wheels.

Thanks that's helpful:tup:

Do you know why you are faster? Is it a confidence thing? Do you get a better feel for the car with the G27? Or do you think there's some difference in how the car responds with the G27?

At that price point look fanatec and t500rs. G27 good but you seem to have money for better.

The pedals feel a hell of a lot better, I have smoother braking and throttle inputs and the G27 feels a but smoother through the turns compared to the DFGT, it also isn't as noisy.

What are the aftermarket upgrade mods you speak of? I have a g27 and was only aware of stiffer pedal springs, what other goodies are there?

A few mods i know :
Nixim mod
Perfect pedal
Chilicoke's handbrake and stiffer gearshifter
Derek's plates and wheel adapters (i saw them here on the forum)
Changing the wheel or the gear knob
Use separate pedals (like fanatec) when playing on Pc

And there are probably more !

Not sure what the perfect pedal mod is, but if it's not a load cell, you forgot load cells! I can't think of any other commercially available mods available but there are others that could be home brewed, if you're creative enough (and know a little about electronics).

As others have said, its imperative you either buy or build a stand. You can build a cheap stand for under $100 USD. I have the G27 Racing Wheel and GT5 has full compatibility with this wheel. If you have any specific questions about the wheel or how to build a stand/cockpit, I'll be glad to help.

I personally would recommend a Fanatec CSR wheel ($199), CSR Elite pedals ($150) and a Rennsport wheel stand ($129).
